Actually if you do a movie before dinner then you will have a hell of a lot to talk about at dinner. The typical dinner then a movie is what's bad but the reverse is actually a pretty good idea.

Hiking/picknic. Or going for a walk on a Greenway. Nature sets a relaxing mood.

It sounds a little creepy, but I’ve taken girls to abandoned properties in the area and spray painted with them. It’s fun and allows a creative element at play, and if you have any kind of skill, it’s an easy way to impress with the opportunity for self disqualifying despite skill.
