To be smooth or the actual and better term charming, is simply to say what you want, even if they disagree, but how they want to hear it. So yes you, are right, you say what you want. Just an advise, charm is extremely essential not only for social life, it can help you at work as well, especially if you are a trader, politician or any type of work which needs a lot of convincing.

Smooth has 3 parts imo. The first: saying what you want in a way that people can understand you. Not having an aggressive tone when speaking nor a timid tone. The second is maintaining a good cadence with your speech. When nervous, human beings tend to change the pitch, tone, speed and/or volume of their voice instead of keeping it "smooth". Lastly: maintaining a relaxing and inviting presence with strong eye contact. Not too much eye contact to freak someone out, but don't look at the floor when you speak.
