What were your thoughts after reading 'The Game'?

I read it in 2007, and earlier this year with VERY different understandings. in 2007, it was about a dude who goes on this incredible transformation that every guy would want, then realises it has it's imperfections. As much as he loves game, he used it to get him the girl, but almost made him lose the girl.

In 2013, I realised It was actually a book about male insecurities. Almost every thing he did, almost every single routine he made was to mask or alleviate the anxiety from his male insecurities. Even to this day Neil is embarassed by a lot of the content from the book, like when he started talking about "Phase shift" routine on the Howard Stern show. That said, the book has some good lessons, but is for the most part, antiquated information.

It's a great story and Neil is a badass author (his other books are also well worth reading).

Back when I read it, I loved two things about it:

1) It opened my eyes to the idea that seduction is a skill you can work at and improve. I had been the typical loser and I thought that was just my lot in life.

2) It was pretty raw and honest. It showed that many guys who got deep into the community crashed and burned. Hard.

The actual routines and methods described in the book do seem very antiquated now and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. As /u/VMikeL said, they are all methods for covering up your insecurities.

I just finished it too and I really liked it. What I got out of it is that you can use the game to help you, just dont like the game become you. Overall its actually a really good book. I liked it so much that I got the rules of the game.

I recall thinking that this was a super douchey book with some really good ideas. The main takeaway I got is that you can use my analytical intelligence as a tool to BENEFIT to my social interactions rather than having it be crippling. Although I had physically grown out of my awkward nerdy kid pubescence, I was mentally still stuck in an AFC mindset (for lack of a better term). I didn't understand why some of my guy friends had a natural magnetism for girls and I didn't. It was frustrating. I attributed it to my being a smart weirdo. This probably sounds familiar to a lot of you. I thought that being highly intelligent was a handicap in the social world. I know now that this is FALSE. You can apply your intelligence to learn about social interactions; it's super effective!

It also helped me realize that you can treat human interactions as a game- the consequences don't matter the vast majority of the time. That's a huge load off. If a girl blows you off, who cares? There's 4 billion women on the planet right now. You might sweat for a minute leading up to the moment but who gives a fuck?

It made me be start thinking about body language. Women naturally pay a lot more attention to this than men (generally speaking). People give away TONS of internal state information based on their posture. It all seems so obvious now, but a few years ago I had no clue. Now it's a fun little game for me and it makes human interaction a lot more effective and rewarding for me personally.

Although I still consider myself pretty goddamn nerdy that is definitely not how people perceive me now. The last few years have had a lot of changes for me but I feel so much more in control of my life because I have built some social skills. No matter what industry you work in, you will be dealing with people.

The Game helped open my eyes to the implicit rules and structures to human interactions. Understanding these structures is super helpful because they are everywhere. Once you get past the douchey parts (i.e. routines/tricks/Illusions!) the core idea there is really good.

Oh, and yeah it helped me get a lot more attention from women.

tl;dr: human interaction has rules- learn rules, ???, profit.
