2014: US law professor advocates before UK parliament for loose enforcement and lenient punishments for those who make false rape accusations. Does anybody know what came of this?

Apart from it just being an insult to actual victims, false accusations clearly serve to delegitimize real victims stories. Even if you don’t care about the accused this still feels like you’re shooting yourself in the foot on some level.

Right? If no one ever exaggerated or lied about what actually happened, if every rape accusation was always 100% true, you wouldn't need to investigate. Just throw the accused in jail and stuff their mouth and ears full of fines.

But because every accusation is not true, we have to investigate. And the more common false accusations are, the more benefit of the doubt we have to give or else we'll just end up jailing loads of completely innocent people. The logical conclusion here is that provably false accusations and especially those accusers who refuse to recant after they have been conclusively proven false (e.g. the accused was on a different continent when the rape supposedly took place but the accuser still refuses to recant) SHOULD be harshly punished because they both harm the accused and rob actual rape victims of the justice that they deserve.

Going easy never seems to work. Lenience in the name of justice may sound fair but it often leads to others being emboldened. Japan during the 1930s had a string of coup plots and politically motivated murders and frequently those behind them were let off easy under the idea that it was all just patriotic fervor. It wasn't until the February 26th Incident, where an army faction marched into Tokyo and tried to force a coup that they realized "whoa, we need to do something" but by then it was too late. The military was too firmly entrenched and political opposition was too scared and disorganized to do anything about it.

False accusations should be treated the same way as lying and should carry strict consequences regardless of where they come from or who they're directed at. We need to apply the laws equally regardless of who broke them or why; change the punishments and rewards but NOT the severity or consistency of them.

The misandrist US law professor is entirely consistent. She wants to ensure no woman is discouraged from making an accusation, whether true or false. Feminist law advocates have consistently tried to strip away presumption of innocence and means of defence in sexual crimes. In a systemically misandrist society they understand that although these could also undermine the few women accused similarly that in practice such prosecutions predominantly affect men. They also are unconcerned how this affects the credibility of real women victims because they are increasingly diminishing the prospect of a successful defence such that credibility of the victim has no bearing. Finally, there will be women who suffer due to damage to their family and loved ones by the harm to such innocent men, but these are suffering internalized misogyny and in the long run will benefit by being parted from their patriarchal oppressor. The overall priority of feminist ideology is female entitlement.

I imagine it's because of the prevalence of "false" accusations being people who were raped, but the evidence isn't strong enough to prove it. It might get classed as "false" even when it is true, and if you then prosecute the victim for not having enough evidence to definitively prove it in every case that will only cause people to stop reporting when they've been raped out of fear of prosecution.
