To be honest it's not simply a matter of politeness. These days it's likely also a matter of not wanting to get accused of sexual harassment. Imagine he left his hand there and she would force herself on his hand. He would be considered a predator or something.

I take public transit daily and personally I enjoy it. I enjoy putting my headphones in, throwing my shades on, and blending in with the crowd yet watching the world around me. I do find traveling with no one around fantastic as well.
