The technical aspects of Kurt's playing were not groundbreaking in and of themselves but the overall song arrangements and shapes (loud/soft/loud/soft) and pure creative energy he brought to music were.
When 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' hit the radio (yes, I'm old as shit) it was mind-blowingly different and awesome.
Some of the first songs I learned on guitar were Nirvana songs. Because I sucked and they were easy. But they never sounded quite like the way he did.

Well, it's probably one of those circumstances where the "right music" hits you at the "right time" in your life and everything just kind of falls into place.
But, hands down, I think Alice in Chains blows Nirvana out of the water on every level. They're still one of my favorite bands. And I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden live.
