Don't forget all the tricks they use include javascript - even though I'm via a secure pipe, their javascript can make direct calls back to reddit with your fingerprint information which can be stored, checked and used for correlation.

Adding tools such as Privacy Badger, Ghostery and reviewing EFF's website for privacy tips regularly is necessary as techniques evolve.

I suspect that IP banning has always been in their toolbox. It's basically the oldest trick in the book for stopping someone you don't want accessing your site / servers from doing so. If they're actually IP banning you can often just get a fresh IP by rebooting your modem.
