This is crazy. A standoff with a kid who is trying to push the boundaries on who makes the decisions in the family requires that the parent first understand who is boss, and how to handle temper tantrums. Looks like the Dad had that understanding down, but the mother didn't.

Kids will eat when they're hungry. If the mother had been a good parent, instead of giving in to the kid's tantrum, she would have backed the Dad's choice, and told him he could eat anywhere but McDonalds, reiterating that he lost the privilege of choosing McDonalds when he tried to force the issue by throwing a fit. When he got tired of being hungry, he'd have eaten what was offered... and if he didn't, missing one meal isn't going to starve and American kid whose family can afford restaurants to death, and he would still learn that his parents are in charge, not him.

Instead, she taught him that throwing a fit is the way for him to get what he wants, and for that psychiatrist to back that up is even more nuts. You have to be a special kind of idiot to tell a parent that a meal at a fast food restaurant is important enough to teach your kid that temper tantrums get him what he wants.
