I must say I am again impressed by the compartmentalization of the feminist brain. To wit:

  1. Feminine things are under-valued by society and even stigmatized by society due to widespread misogyny.

  2. Feminized products command exploitatively-higher prices.

Does not compute

The two ideas are incoherent. If the first complaint was true, painting a razor pink would be like dipping it in shit and no retailer would do it.

Christ on a cracker, the sheer dumbness of feminist beliefs never cease to amaze me. And people invest their entire personalities in this dreck.

Isn't the "pink tax" pretty much women's fault, since they're the ones who showed companies they were willing to pay more for "feminine" scents, colors, and styles in the first place?

Absolutely nothing was ever stopping them from "shopping like men" and buying generic panties in plastic bags. The fact that many western women seem to often have higher (translated: unreasonable) standards for that kind of thing is absolutely not the fault of any imaginary "patriarchy."

There is no fraud going on. The prices are visible. In my home county, there was a law where if the price of a product on the shelf is lower than the price at the checkout counter, the customer was owed a cash-back amount 5 times more than the price difference (or something like that). Pricing is VERY transparent. Yes, it is true that the generic goods are often placed near your feet while the high-margin brand goods are placed conveniently at arm-level, but, really that isn't fraud, it is simply product display that exploits people's laziness. If you are determined to buy the cheaper products, you absolutely can; you can even find prices online to find the best buy. If a woman is mesmerized by the pinkness of a product and robotically forks-out more cash, is that the fault of the manufacturer? The retailer? Everyone with a penis? Who?

It's a lot easier to spend extra money on feminine scents, colors and styles when you're buying with money earned from a man's labor. When you're the one out there actually putting in the hours and putting your life at risk to earn a dollar, you're less likely to spend in on something that is "pretty" but no more functional than something that is "ugly".

Victim blame much? It isn't fair to blame women for the choices they make when it is society and the patriarchy that is brainwashing them into making those decisions! You sound like the type of person who wouldn't call it rape when a woman gets drunk and consents to sex with some neckbeard that she wouldn't consent to sober!

Sob society always puts women in no-win situations and then savagely mocks them for being there! They just can't win, those gorgeous victims.

TL:DR explains the pink tax. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HEr8zmVEZQ

Long story short: None of the things compared are the same. The women's version of shampoo or deodorant or whatever they are comparing. Will always have both more variety of both active ingredients and non active ingredients. As well as having different amounts of shared ingredients. These products are not the same.

I think I've figured out the "pink tax".

For most consumer items, women are the default. Men don't care.

For a handful of items, men are either the default (razors?), or it's gender neutral (lego?). Some (but not all) women, being accustomed to their privilege, feel like they are losing out. They demand special pink items, and companies see a way to profitably meet this demand.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

My take on this? When 'femaleness' is suggested in a product, it becomes a premium product that people are actually willing to pay more for. The bit with the pink calculator suggests to me that women are willing to pay more for a pink product because it is made special, for women and there is absolutely no qualitative reason to buy a pink calculator if you don't want one. Perhaps this is the price one pays if one has the idea that one's sex makes them more valuable than a product made for mere men (p'tui!)

No one puts a gun to a woman's head and forces her to buy a pink calculator and there is nothing stopping a woman from buying a bag full of yellow Bic razors if buying the overpriced pink one is offensive to her. The manufacturers have discovered that women are willing to pay more for products that suggest femininity because women have an inflated sense of how much that is worth. I know a thing or two about marketing and that is the idea that seems to jump-out at me. The people who sell stuff are very interested in chasing higher margins and if a pink product or a 'for women' product can fetch a higher price, they WILL charge one. How can anyone reach any OTHER conclusion? Are women being forced to buy stuff in supermarkets? Secret anti-perspirant, 'strong enough for a man but made for a woman'- that IS the mark of a product that is trying to position itself as BETTER than something which is made merely for a stinky, filthy scum-of-the-earth man (eeyeew).

Or, hey, you know, maybe its price discrimination when no one is forbidding them from buying black calculators and no one would look at a woman funny if she bought a black calculator instead of a goddamn pink one, FFS.

I've thought about how feminists complain about 'men are the default gender' and that's a privilege. It makes no sense. A privilege is special treatment, you can't get that if you are the default.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And in situaions where men are NOT treated as the default, that is male privilege as well, such as how men are supposedly praised for mediocre performance in doing traditionally female tasks. Men spend every second of the day bathing in unabashed privilege, always leaping from peak to peak and going from strength to strength and, if you can't see this, then that is (conveniently for the feminist accuser) damning proof that your privilege is beyond collossal.

The invisible monster hiding under your bed is real. The fewer reasons you have to beleive in it, the bigger and more out-of-control your monster is.

I feel the same way about the pink tax as i do about men paying more for car insurance.

Men pay more for car insurance because men cause more accidents. Want to pay less? Then get men to cause fewer accidents.

Guess what my advice for dealing with the pink tax is.

What is stopping women from shopping that way generally?

Seriously, I thought chicks knew how to shop or something? Are the price tags on the items not legible enough?

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Good for them. The "Pink Tax" is a real thing. It's one of the few issues feminism has actually correctly identified (that there is a pink tax, not the causes). Doing more to inform consumers about their options is a good thing. The advice of think about purchases logically, not emotionally, is sound advice. The advice of look at more than just the pink sections of the store is solid advice. While the article had lots of hyperbolic references to the mythical wage gap, the actual advice given is sound and reasonable.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'd thought that women knew how to shop, seeing as how they traditionally do more shopping and there's more retail space devoted to women's goods and so on. But I was wrong. Checking price tags is too burdensome and whether one number is bigger than another is too misleading if the product is pink.

[–]GenderNeutralLanguag 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That women do more shopping just means more research goes into how to short circuit the logic part of the brain of female shoppers with clever marking ploys.

That there is information on how to avoid this logic failure and how to avoid emotional shopping is reasonable valid and useful information.

Thank God the secrets to finding lower prices are now laid bare for all to see!

[–]aokusman 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It cost more to add a dash of pink to a black calculator versus a plane black calculator. This is common sense.
