Our obsession on sexual child abuse is deliberate: it's the only form of child abuse in which the perpetrator is predominantly male and the victim is predominantly female.

Yet... only about 7% of child abuse is child sexual abuse.

All other forms of abuse, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse and neglect, are downplayed by the feminist meta-narrative because the predominant victim is male and the predominant perpetrator is female.

Now add the mainstream media screaming from every rooftop every occurrence of sexual child abuse and you manufacture the public perception that other forms of child abuse don't matter.

Or, more specifically, "only the forms of child abuse committed by adult men against children actually do harm".

All part of the plan to marginalize and demonize men, my friend.

I think sexual abuse gets more airtime because parents are more afraid of their kids being sexually abused than physically abused.

Most people think that being sexually abused when young is more harmful than being physically abused.

We might be expected to "buck up" to physical abuse, especially from peers...but as a society we view sexual abuse as "shaming" and "damaging" in a way that we don't assign to physical abuse.

American culture has a lot of its roots in puritanical christian thought - and you really need only look at how movies with extreme violence are thought as mostly "ok" for kids to watch, but movies with even one sex scene get higher ratings. We're afraid of sexuality as a culture, thus we're more afraid of sexual abuse.

I think you'd have to be stretching pretty hard to make it something "feminism" did to US culture, especially because the puritans were here a looonnnng while before them, and this obsession with "obscenity" comes mostly from the christian right, which seems to account for a lot of people in the US

I think kanuk's view is way to conspiratorial and contrived... I don't think you need committee meetings to arrive where we are, the machinations of society are good enough to do it.

However, and I could be wrong not having a list of studies to refer to, but isn't psychological control one of the "primarily female" mechanisms? You know, how girls in high school handle each other, etc. So it would make sense that it's more commonly practiced by them, and thus more attributed to them.

Similarly, while women commit physical violence at least as much as men to, men tend to show more damage as a result, don't they? And when you're talking physical abuse, it's the visible damage that shows up well on camera.

And for sexual abuse, there is still the social idea that men always want sex, so you can't abuse them with it. And it's worse for girls because there is implied penetration, or at least the intent... which goes to physical violation, etc. Easy to picture, prey on in reports.

I think the equality here is that "each side" has their large focus, but the psychological side is at least as damaging as the rest and shouldn't be relegated just to "mean girls" and "men's comedy", but be taken seriously, because there is serious lasting damage.
