Omg but didn't Athena, a woman, turn her into a monster? Also, where are the peeps that keep destroying statues at for this?

[–]for_against[S] 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, well Athena was probably just letting off some internalized misogyny. /s

I don't know if this is the right crowd for saying this, but... this is so blatantly wrong on so many levels, the only explanation I can really come up with is: the devil can't steal your soul unless he tells you he's the devil and makes sure you know.

[–]UnicornHostels 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women can be perpetrators of sexism against women, slut shaming and misogyny. It’s a real problem.

[–]Luchadorgreen 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t want anybody to destroy it. People will be screeching “fragile masculinity” if someone vandalizes it no matter who does it or for what reason.

[–]KilljoyTheTrucker 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Yep. For being raped by Poseidon in Athenas temple.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa

[–]for_against[S] 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The article says there are also other interpretations, that it was a consentual relationship, although it doesn't name them.

More importantly, the guy whose head she's holding was not the alleged rapist.

More importantly still, what kind of message is being broadcast by putting this statue in front of a courthouse?

[–]KilljoyTheTrucker 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There are fuckloads of interpretations, especially if you look at the Roman adaptations too.

I'm not defending the statue being placed there. Just answering a question on the predominant interpretation of the religious basis of Medusa and her origins.

I'm aware.

Not a good/fair one.

[–]for_against[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I wasn't suggesting you were defending the statue, if anything it goes to show that rape accusations have been abused since the dawn of time...

I'm not really too familiar with all the interpretations, do you know off the top of your head who might have said it was consentual? Since the author doesn't mention. (Leaving aside the fact that, in any case, it wasn't really a true story to begin with).

[–]KilljoyTheTrucker 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not specifically, just know I've heard it mentioned before.

Here's some rabbit holes/weird places that may lead you somewhere if you'd like;

The only version of the Medusa story where she is a victim was written by a Roman poet centuries after the origination of the Greek myth. Most versions have Medusa as a born monster.

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

How did I forgot about that?!?! Truly awful tbh.

[–]KilljoyTheTrucker 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think Aphrodite "made" one of the other Gorgons in a similarly cruel/spiteful manner too.

[–]hendrixski 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

but didn't Athena turn her into a monster?

It gets better!

  • Yes, Athena slut shamed Medusa by turning her into a monster. THEN...
  • Athena gave Perseus the mirror-shield to kill Medusa and guided his hand to sever Medusa's head.
  • Upon Medusa's death Athena was so pleased with the mournful wailing of Medusa's sisters that she invented a flute that sounded just like their woeful cries (the aulos).
  • Medusa was pregnant with Pegasus (the winged horse) and it was Athena who helped capture and tame Pegasus making the bridle that he (Medusa's child) was ridden with.
  • Athena was such a vindictive asshole that she had Medusa's severed head embroidered on her armor!

Almost every depiction of Athena in the past 2,500 years shows Medusa's severed head. I think a better way to make the statement that the artist wanted is to duplicate a statue of Athena and instead show Medusa in that pose wearing armor that displays Athena's severed head.

[–]excess_inquisitivity 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Further, the Medusa sculpture gives the impression that it’s okay to behead a man (metaphorically, of course) even if he isn’t the abuser, which plays right into the mob mentality surround #MeToo. An allegation must merely be made before thousands demand the accused lose their livelihood. Due process be damned.

[–]RyansPutter 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And I thought "Fearless Girl" was the dumbest feminist statue out there.

Jesus christ. This country is fucked.

[–]Pickled_Elmo 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a very fitting symbol for the MeToo movement: the destruction of innocent men.

[–]TXJohn83 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Yeap let’s show a woman killing an innocent man as the symbol of #MeToo

[–]RelativeFrequency 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Could you explain how Perseus is an innocent man?

Or is this one of those subs where no one reads the articles and just circlejerk over how angry the title makes them?

[–]for_against[S] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

From the article. Did YOU read it?

"even if Ovid’s take on Medusa was the true version, the statue being set up in Manhattan to bolster the #MeToo movement gets the message wrong. The statue of Medusa depicts her holding Perseus’ head, which many will note is not Poseidon."

[–]RelativeFrequency -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The statue of Medusa depicts her holding Perseus’ head, which many will note is not Poseidon.

Which is what I said. Perseus. LMAO, did you misread my comment as Poseidon? It's like two sentences. How did you do that?

[–]for_against[S] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if you're even smart/honest enough to bother patiently explaining this to, but the alleged rapist in this story is Poseidon. The person whose head she's holding is somebody else: Perseus.

Therefore, the MeToo movement is openly celebrating the murder of someone who is not Medusa's rapist, and frankly, it looks like the mother of all self-owns on MeToo's part. They don't care if you actually raped somebody. Having this statue placed outside of a courthouse should frankly be grounds to have ANY sexual assault charges there dropped.

[–]RelativeFrequency -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, Perseus isn't a rapist. He's just a murderer. He broke into Medusa's home, killed her family and cut off her head while she was sleeping so he could get laid back home.

But no you're right, he's totally innocent. Should murder even be a crime? WHERE WILL SOCIETY BE IF WE GLORIFY SELF-DEFENSE!?!

I feel like you have to be trolling me at this point. You're not actually dumb enough to think Meduse defending herself from a murderer is bad.

[–]for_against[S] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If the MeToo movement (and whoever the municipal authorities are who decide these things are) hadn't voluntarily elected to place this statue outside of a courthouse to nonironically represent justice for alleged sex crimes, you might have half a point. As it stands, this statue has NOTHING to do with justice for victims of sexual violence. Even then, beheading is not typically a punishment for sexual assault.

This would still leave out the fact that Medusa herself was a murderous demon. So killing her woul have been much more an act of "social justice" than beheading people on spurious charges of sexual assault.

You did admit at the beginning that you're not familiar with this sub, so I would recommend you troll on some more fitting subject.

[–]Isle-of-Ivy 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You just said that Perseus wasn't the rapist, yet immediately do a 180 and try to say that Medusa here beheaded Perseus for sexual assault. Which one is it?

Medusa in this version would've beheaded Perseus for trying to fucking murder her.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You just said that Perseus wasn't the rapist, yet immediately do a 180 and try to say that Medusa here beheaded Perseus for sexual assault.

Do you even know what the word "Spurious" means?

Definition: "Not what it purports to be; false or fake.

So nowhere in the response did they say Perseus raped Medusa. It's only those like you who are inferring such. Understand?

Medusa in this version would've beheaded Perseus for trying to fucking murder her.

You are aware that Medusa murdered men by turning them into stone, right?

[–]Isle-of-Ivy 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But no one here is claiming Perseus raped Medusa. There's no need to call it a false accusation because he wasn't being accused in the first place. The user was accusing him of murder.

You are aware that Medusa murdered men by turning them into stone, right?

Who? Men who were trying to kill her? Men she accidentally turned to stone? In the legend where she was raped and punished, what innocents did she kill?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

See, we are holding Perseus to modern standards. But, he did succeed in cutting off Medusa's head, so what the statue depicts is totally false. Holding Perseus for being a murderer is just like calling out George Washington for holding slaves. It just doesn't make any sense.

Keep in mind, that even Perseus had a shitty childhood, and he freed Medusa from her suffering. His act also led to the birth of Pegasus and Chrysaor. So, it was a win-win situation.

[–]user_miki 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Didn't they say feminists don't hate men. Those feminist that are able to put statues in center of Manhattan are not real feminists.Only the keyboard warriors on the internet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Those feminist that are able to put statues in center of Manhattan are not real feminists.Only the keyboard warriors on the internet.

Mary Ross

Ellen Pence

Look them up. It's not the keyboard warriors on the internet causing trouble.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Send that fucker sculptor in front of the real Medusa, and let him be turned to stone once and for all, for worshipping his "queen". People don't even have any standards these days.

[–]Rallings 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The ironic part is that they're saying the victims of me to who report it are monsters.

[–]ItzPulido -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

...are you all serious about this upsetting you? So many other cases where mens rights can be talked about, but you are upset over a statue...of a mythological story....

[–]for_against[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Imagine if, after the pro-life community manages to outlaw abortion, they put a statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa - the original version - in front of the supreme court. They wouldn't do something like that, of course, because it would be hateful and insane.

[–]ItzPulido 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So they are placing this statue in front of the supreme court?

[–]for_against[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, I just noticed that the article I posted doesn't mention its location. It's in front of the Manhattan criminal court, by invitation of the city authorities.

If it were just a private thing, I might even agree with you, but this is basically a big middle finger to every man that walks into a courthouse.

This sculpture was made by a man...not a woman.
