Does Masculinity = Alpha?

One does not need to be masculine to be alpha and being masculine doesn't make you alpha.

An alpha is just someone that others respect, want to follow and try to impress. A natural leader and ruler. Someone others automatically submit to.

I consider myself to be alpha. I do what I want without fear of being ridiculed. I get what I want without even asking for it. I am confident in myself and everything I do. When meeting new people I don't have to qualify myself, they try to impress me. People feel protected around me and when there is a fight I can break it up with my presence alone. People want to be around me and want to get to know me.

When I'm with a group of friends I'm the spokesperson of that group. I'm responsible for everything they do and outsiders speak to me first. In school when there was something to decide that impacted the whole class teachers asked me for my opinion. In the military I always got put in positions of power and the same thing happens at every job.

I don't need to ask for invitations, because people want to have me around. When I'm at a concert I get invited backstage. At a bar I get invited for free stuff. Even when I'm not struggling with something strangers offer help.

Securities, police and other authority figures like me even though I'm breaking rules constantly. It's like I'm a little bit immune to the law.

But I'm not traditionally masculine. I wear skinny jeans, cut my hair like twice a year, not muscular, show emotions, hug most people, always wear something pink or purple, am convincing when crossdressing, don't brag or show off,...

I'm just being myself without conforming to gender roles or social norms. I have a confident way of presenting myself and I'm not scared of standing up for myself or defending others even in the most dangerous situations.

I don't think all masculine men are alpha, but I do think all alphas are masculine.

But this convo is almost impossible without definitions. Most of us have very specific, personal ideas about what is and isn't alpha. Dude below who says he wears skinny jeans, does't work out, has long hair etc. - he sounds masculine to me, but I bet a bunch of RPs would say he isn't.

One thing I don't buy re: alpha is this current fad (on PPD) to view low self-control men, criminals, prisoners etc. as 'alpha'. Not being able to control yourself is the opposite of masculine/alpha in my book.

I've met two truly (in my opinion) alpha males in my life and the best way I can describe how they differ from others is positive strength, almost like sunshine. They don't need to be aggressive or try to dominate, others will want to be submissive. If I would have to pinpoint common traits in true alphas I would say intelligence, positive outlook on life, calmness and resilient strength, being the bigger person in conflict situations without undermining their authority.

Alpha and masculine tend to be connected, but they are not always together. I've known my share of "manly men" that still did terrible with the ladies, so if we are talking alpha in a sexual manner, they aren't one in the same in my opinion.

There is a huge answer needed here, I'll just provide a bit.

Alpha is about being able to convince others that you should be the leader, both men and women. This is done through a variety of social skills; physical attractiveness, charisma, persuasiveness, confidence, and a variety of other subtle skills. Without the ability to create consensus around his leadership potential, a guy is just a guy, but not an "alpha" or leader of the group.

Not necessarily. Aggressive betas that try to fight everyone can be incredibly masculine.

The best way to understand that social model is to look at wolf packs. The alpha is the wolf in charge. That's what an alpha is: the one in command of the situation.

There are plenty of men who are masculine enough to be alpha (read: have high T and all the essential traits that provides) but are too dumb, socially retarded, or low on the totem pole to be what TRP calls Alpha.
