Polygyny, like divorce in the Law of Moses, was permitted but it is in no way the ideal.

Therefore, we, like Jesus, should strive for the ideal at Creation and the new Creation in Christ. One man, one woman.

Polygyny was mainly permitted in the Law due to extenuating circumstances. The Kinsman Redeemer was there so that each man's line could have an inheritance. It wasn't so a man could get another wife. Polygyny for war was there because men died during war, so not every woman would have a husband.
Having more than 1 wife prohibits you from leadership in ministry (1 Timothy 3), and that's something I believe every man should strive for whether in an official capacity or not.
Note also that every example of polygyny in the Bible is fraught with marital and parental strife or idolatry (Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, etc). That's not something you want to emulate.

I’ve known a lot of people who live in a polygamous/swinger lifestyle and 100% of those I’ve known/knew are divorced.

Let's see what the Bible says...

Matthew 19:4-6:

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.

I Corinthians 7:2:

Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband

Ephesians 5:31:

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh

[A few more could be thrown in from I Timothy and Titus]

We can argue all we want about "why" and "what" in the Old Testament but Christians do not live under that covenant. The cure for the feminine imperative is simply teaching as the Bible states. There isn't anything fancy and there aren't any tricks, just plain ol' Gospel teaching and living.

Edit: I find some of the answers here fascinating. When Jesus gave the Great Commission and said "..make disciples of all nations", did He really mean all nations or most nations? In the same way, why is what He said about marriage any different? He said it, that settles it. Are Christians influencing culture or is (the lack of) culture influencing Christians?

Here is a great polygamy mental hack to know if you still have a blue pill mindset. First, go to the word and be willing to admit you have been lied to about monogamy. There are lots of resources out there, but if you just accept the word using a normal conservative interpretation of scripture polygamy becomes very obviously true. Here is the the mental hack. When you are dating a Christian girl tell her that the bible says polygamy is true and that's what you believe. This is the ULTIMATE test of whether a woman REALLY wants to obey and follow you and the Lord or if she just wants a sucker she can manipulate and suck resources from. Sincerely show her the arguments and explain why. If she doesn't agree then there is only one glaringly obvious reason: SHE DOESN'T RESPECT YOU... PERIOD! Women get their guidance and submit to SOMEBODY. Always. Is it you? God? Their friends? The culture? This is the ultimate test. If she just puts her foot down and says I don't wanna do it cuz I don't wanna do it it means she does. not. respect. you. She values her friends opinions and her personal comfort more than you. Brutal truths brothers. You can make it clear that you are not hungry for multiple wives but you also can't deny the Lord and his word and pretend it isn't true. And if she still wants you to marry her even and become a monogomist it means she doesn't really respect your convictions and calling before the Lord. Dump her. It's the bellwether that demonstrates she doesn't really want YOU, just the benefits you bring.

We're supposed to submit to our governing authorities (Romans 13:1). At least when it does not conflict with God's commands. I can't find any command in the Bible to take more than 1 wife or take as many as I can afford too. Therefore, I must respect my jurisdictions against it.

The closest passage I can think of is Deut 25:5-10, where a man is supposed to marry his brother's widow if he died not having a son. That seems specific to to the lineage of the houses of Israel though. I don't have a brother, so I guess I'm off the hook. ;-)

There's other reasons too, but this line of reasoning seems pretty cut and dried for anywhere it is illegal.

Even in the Old Testament, you have to look at the way the narratives are put together. The first example of polygamy is Lamech, in the line of Cain, and is part of the description of the degeneration of the human race, and its greater and greater wickedness. Even among the godly that practiced it, in every case it led to severe problems. Abraham and his concubines, Jacob's wives and concubines, David's many wives. In Solomon's example, it led to outright apostasy and the dividing of the kingdom. Jesus also said, regarding divorce, that from the beginning it was not so, but a man would leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two would be one flesh, mirroring God's relationship with His people, a common analogy in the Old and New Testaments. So just because you don't have a statement saying "David sinned by having many wives" you can see from the narrative, culminating with Bathsheba and then the rebellion of his sons, how much conflict the practiced caused in his life.

Monogamy is the Biblical standard throughout. As was said elsewhere, the Law of Moses was never meant to be normative, but was accommodating. "Moses allowed you to divorce because of the hardness of your hearts." Marriage is difficult and always has been- the disciples reacted to Jesus' teaching by saying it's better never to get married, then. The first black pills! But it's hard on purpose, and is a major engine of our growth and sanctification when approached Biblically.

1.) It does not necessarily follow from the fact that God gave Adam one wife that He wants the rest of us to have only one wife.

2.) Christ's teachings on divorce in no way preclude polygyny. Look at the text. It does not say anything about monogamy.

3.) I Peter 3 either means that only pastors and deacons are forbidden to have multiple wives (leaving the rest of us free to be polygynous) or it means that they must have at least one wife. A man with two wives does indeed have one wife.

4.) God portrayed Himself as polygynous in Ezekiel 23 and Jeremiah 3.

5.) Christ pictured Himself as polygynous in the parable in Matthew 25.

6.) Dozens of men in the Bible, many of them important followers of God, were polygynous. If this were against His will, He would have said so. Let's not say things are sin when He doesn't.

7.) Often Christians argue against polygyny by saying that the marital "one flesh" phrase means a man can't have multiple wives. In fact, I Corinthians deals with this almost directly. If a man is one flesh with any harlot he goes in to, then he is one flesh with each wife as well. Furthermore, polygynous marriage with multiple one flesh relationships mirrors the Lord's one spirit relationship with each of us.

8.) Polygyny was practiced, but not the issue condemned, in I Cor 5.

9.) I Cor 7 provisionally commands polygyny in a similar way to the OT Law about marrying the dead brother's wife.

10.) The Holy Spirit prophesied about forbidding marriage (in cases when God did not, of course) in I Timothy 4.

Gentlemen, polygyny is as Christian Red Pill as it gets.

God cares about the stability of the family unit primarily.
Polygyny existed in and around harsh times.
Polygyny is an excellent method for building a larger family and therfore a bigger legacy.
Polygyny gives the woman the alpha tingles and the beta provisioning via competition anxiety, satisfying hypergamy(red pill)
Polygyny was a reward for strong and successful men in the old days and now it's just soft polygyny.
Parental exhaustion is a real source of divorce in two income households, Polygyny mitigates this and engenders the proper rearing of children.
Polygyny is a direct assault on a woman's ego and sense of entitlement.

I doubt if real polygyny is practical in 2020 but it really seems like it would be a good start at rebuilding the kingdom in the west.

It might not be the ideal but it definitely is biblical. For those relying on Paul, I do wonder why his exhortation towards forsaking marriage and pursuing celibacy elsewhere is not given the same weight as his exhortations towards monogamy.

My own point of view is that I don't think marriage /singleness / sexual ethics should be anywhere near the centre of the focus of one's life.

Although it might not necessarily be immoral- the practice would exclude individuals from eldership.

Ideally- RPC should be a place where we are raising up a generation of strong leaders within the church to continue building the kingdom- and thus although not to be condemned- it certainly would not be ideal for a man who wishes to lead the members of his church body.

But since Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant and since his idea of Marriage is as the original intent which is Monogamy.

I think monogamy is more patriarchal than polygyny itself (contrary to what some people think). But I don't know how well to elaborate that view..

1. They can barely get a single woman to follow them and are envious of men who are successful enough to attract multiple women. Pure envy. This is huge.

2. They still deeply believe in the blue pill romantic programming that a woman will "complete you" and that you will have this beautiful infinite soul connection.
