Losing a dog is incredibly hard, and it’s even worse when they were with you during a difficult period of your life. I lost my little Cody boy after having him through a bad break up and it took a while to feel like there wasn’t a hole in my heart afterwards. I think one mistake people make when dealing with pet death is not treating it like the death of a human family member. It almost feels like you’re expected to just get over it and move on, but that’s not how grief of any kind works. Maybe you can keep space open for Jack. There are some nice memorial stones and garden pieces on Amazon that you can get customized. It would give your husband a place where he can be alone (or with you) to talk to Jack and remember the good times with him, and it might make his loss a little less jarring over time. Jack was his battle buddy coming home. He doesn't know what to do with out him and that speaks so highly of Jack.

Your husband just lost his best friend. I know it's hard to hear but you're his wife. Jack was the one who listened to him when he was scared, frustrated, etc. He could "have a beer with Jack" and just be him. That's irreplaceable.

Was Jack a squirrel chaser? Squrrel feeder in the back yard "Jack's Seed N Feed" Did he bark at the mailman? Picture of Jack inside the mailbox saying "I'm still watching" You need to make Jack someone who left something behind. If he did go "sit in the yard and have a beer with Jack" get him and Jack matching Beer mugs. Or move Jack's water bowl outside with his collar around it and let it be a water bowl for random critters.

Your husband's best friend had fur. If he was a buddy he lost in battle - you buy him a drink on his Valhalla day. He's a battle buddy who needs - I'm going to say squirrel feeder - if squirrels drove him nuts. (Veterans have a dark sense of humor. It will be funny. Jack would be SOOOO annoyed)

Dogs display incredible devotion and appreciation for their humans. The moment you walk in through the door, they practically throw themselves at you.

As a child, my wife called her father Mushi, and whenever he came home from work she would rush to the door with a joyful 'Mushi home'. Her younger siblings joined her in the ritual. That routine disappeared as she got older.

She taught our own children the 'Mushi home' routine when they were young. When I got home, they would all rush to the door. As they got older, they dropped it.

To keep the routine alive, I started giving my wife the 'Mushi home' treatment whenever she returned to the house, even if it was just from shopping. We've kept it up for decades. This little ritual helps reconnect us and demonstrate our devotion. It might seem silly or embarrassing at first, but did that ever stop Jack from love bombing your hubby? Be like Jack.

Full text: We just had to say goodbye to our lab who was almost 12. My husband got him right after getting back from overseas and that dog got him through all the hard times and transitioning back to civilian life. He says he saved his life, and he probably did.

I don’t know how to support him. He’s just been walking like a zombie cleaning up all Jack’s stuff. What do I do? Watching him is harder than letting Jack go. 😔

Just be there for him. Grief is impossible to just wash away. He needs time to process and work through it, however long that may take. Be there if he wants to vent or talk about it, but don't force him to. Everyone copes differently.

Losing a pet is as devastating as heartbreak or the loss of a close human companion.
