I’m on mobile and I don’t know how to link the old post, it was about my bf who got pretty depressed starting a stressful job/career. I didn’t know what to do and I was caught up in a lot of selfish thoughts and anxiety that made me a not-so-supportive partner.

The comments I received were much needed. I took a week to gather my thoughts and do some self reflection. I committed myself to working on that dialogue between my boyfriend and I, making sure I was coming across as a landing space for his feelings and not a judgmental bitch (frankly). So it was a rough few days and he was still trying to tell me he was fine but I was sticking to my resolution to be a good girlfriend so I was being patient. Low and behold one night he finally cracks and tells me he took up drinking and can’t stop.

My father is an alcoholic and I have significant trauma (and ongoing issues as I still live at home). My boyfriend has known about every abuse, bad day, family fight, for years. He didn’t want to tell me. I was very calm and unbiased and kind on the phone and he just poured out his feelings of stress from work. I’m proud of how that conversation went but when I hung up the phone I just cried and cried.

I am trying to separate my father from my boyfriend as that’s the fair thing to do. But i can’t help feeling betrayed. Before it’s an addiction it’s a couple of choices. I feel like I am reliving my worst memories.

How do I navigate this? I’ve been trying so hard to change for the better and nurture this relationship. It feels like God is testing me.
