In my highschool years I dated a chick that was always threatening to break up. Simultaneously she would dread game me by flirting with dudes who she knew I deeply disliked.

Long story short I got over the constant stress and dread and dumped her.

She had a complete mental break down, all her friends were calling me and letting me know how big a prick I was. She let my work know that I drank underage...

She then pestered me for the next 6 months to get back with her, years later I would get drunk calls from her about how I ruined the fairy tale that was supposed to be her life. She got married and had kids, I would get drunk dialed every time they had a big fight and I would hear about how perfect I was and then she would self loath about why I didn't want her. She awkwardly showed up at my 27th birthday party that my friends threw for me, she heard about it through the grape vine and wasn't exactly invited. She attempted to fawn over me right in front of my current GF and my best man politely kicked her out.

All this from a girl who threatened to dump me over the slightest provocation. If I had to guess how many times she threatened to dump me during our 2 year relationship, it would be about 50 times.

Yes that's right, 2 years in highschool and she showed up uninvited at my 27th birthday party. For those who are weak at the maths, that is 10 years later.

I still get cold chills thinking about it.

Yeah, you're pretty on spot there. A close friend of mine had a boyfriend, whom she wanted to get rid of after 4 months of relationship, but she didn't want to break up with him, she just wanted him "to get it" and be the one to break up.

She would start treating him badly, being bitchy when he was around and give him all kinds of bullshit.

At one point I actually tried to convince her to "woman up", be honest and break up.

Here's what she said:"So you actually want me to tell him, that it just isn't working out and that we might not fit as well as I thought we did in the beginning and I rather be alone?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I want you to tell him!"

She looked at me as if I had asked her to murder the councellor, and then started whinning, that it's to hard and she didn't want to be the bad guy.

So she kept on being a total bitch to him.

In the end he did break up with her, and to this day he writes her letters how sorry he is and how wrong he was in breaking up and that he wants her back. It's actually really sad and painful to watch.

I'm in an LTR and my SO recently said to me she wanted to leave me because of the way I have been treating her recently (RP), and wants to be put back on the pedestal (BP last year).

I maintained frame, said okay - do you 100% want to leave me, because there is no second chance - she said she didn't know, and it has been left at that. Back to normal since then.

I have a feeling if she really wanted to break up she would do it.

If she wants to break up with you she will say "we need to talk" otherwise it's just a shit test

True with me. All the LTR I have been in, either the woman or I walked out. Within a couple of weeks the woman would visit, with the obvious intention of getting back together. In every case I thought it wasn't worth while.

I just went through this process. I'm similar age and experience as you, I was dating a women 10 years my senior recently. She threw down with "You're not the man I fell in love with" about a month ago. I've reason to believe she may have been cheating on me recently. And so began the long process of breakup-chicken: not talking to eachother for weeks and seeing who will be the one to make the call. She sent the breakup email a few days ago, I responded politely. It's a done deal, very clean. I think the trick is to predict the breakup so you can be emotionally prepared to deal with it. I feel happy at this point, this is the most successful breakup I've ever experienced.

Sounds legit. A person who wants to break up goes through with it and doesn't give you an "do it or else"-ultimatum. Perhaps when she is invested in your relationship to a higher degree (f.ex. marriage) she may really want to give you a fair warning, but in a "mere" LTR...

There are usually signs like this preceeding the breakup.

Only once did I get an "honest" breakup and that's because she had a powerful desire for someone else and couldn't afford the time fiddling around. I was extremely bored with her anyway and let her go without much fuss.

Never ever received a serious break up through all of my relationships. In my first ever relationship, bitch tried to drop it on me. Said things were bad, yadda yadda. I was the only guy with a car AND a driver's license in my school which was at the very least what multiple girls called me "fuckable". My SMV was huge. She tried to betafy me.

Second relationship was 4 years of BB behaviour on my part. Managed to man the fuck up, prepared myself three weeks prior mentally and emotionally and broke the ties.

Third relationship was two years of a transition between AF to BB. AF behaviour was still latent; broke up when I got fed of her shit.

Moral of the story: All the times I broke up in a relationship, I came out of it stronger, better, and my next relationship improved. If anyone wants to break from a LTR, take my experience as someone who came out of all of them better, not worse.

If she doesn't have another man lined up to branch swing to, she's very unlikely to break up with you.
