Instead of using your lower personality as motivation and driving yourself deeper into it, you could just meditate and be mindful of your emotions.
I’ve been steady at a medium/higher personality for a while because of meditation and not allowing myself to be motivated by petty bullshit.
It’s more about discipline than anything else. Your emotions don’t rule your actions when you’re mindful of why you’re feeling a certain way.
When you’re disciplined you don’t need to be motivated to get shit done. You just fuckin do it.

The only way you become good at something is by doing it for long periods of time. How do you do that? Make it a habit and do it every single day until the point it becomes a part of you. So much so that it feels weird when you dont practice that habit.
None of this mumbo jumbo bullshit is needed that OP posted. Going for quick fixes is the easiest path to failure.

OP wrote a nice piece that can be positive for many people. Why you gotta be negative and shit on it?

Yes you are correct you could meditate and be mindful of your emotions but this will take time, your lower emotions can provide surprisingly powerful motivation for you to get shit done.
Yeah you're right, motivation just makes discipline easier and come by quicker.

motivation is fleeting. discipline is concrete. discipline equals freedom by jocko willink is a good book.

Nice post, haven’t thought of the mind in this way before. Does anyone have any thoughts on applying motivation/discipline concepts to projects/business/life stuff that doesn’t have predictable observable results? I find it very easy to go to the gym but working on my programming project feels like a huge mental wall. Any thoughts?

If you fail to plan you plan to fail.
Set you expectations, add rewards for achieving your weekly metrics.
Google and other startups / corporates use OKR's. Set yourself quarterly goals and then what your expectations/ milestones to get to that goal.
I use smartsheets (basically online MS Project) to direct my team for engineering and business development tasks.
For personal use smart works (but it's like a few hundred $'s a year) but googles notes or trello work too if you don't like spending money.
Every month I also try to do a new activity (paint a self-portrait etc, learn to sail). Sometimes it takes two months but basically, by years end I have new experiences that I otherwise wouldn't have done if I had just stuck to running or hiking. I also have a bucket list of things I want to do before I die - all my friends think it's a little crazy but I had a terrible injury in 2011 and I realised I wasn't living life completely.

For me it comes to breaking down tasks. I'm a simple man and I need EVERYTHING task, meeting and event is in one place. I've found that TRELLO does the job well. IF you go to http://simplestoicism.com/betterforless/ and pop your email in I'll be emailing everyone in a couple days exactly how I use Trello to get shit done.
It includes a goals list, automation from a few different things and a calendar.

Thanks for the response, I’ll check it out (although I’m on Trello for a student council thing and had to turn off alerts ha)

This is, honestly, the most helpful thing I’ve read in a long time
[–]kibbehorh[S] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks. Have you ever heard of Stoicism?
[–]FacSolumId0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I had, but thought I’d was much more about controlling your mind

You copied this exact idea from an RSD video Link
Self discipline will get you further than this nonsense.

I think this was great. A great practice in mindfulness and self improvement is writing out why you want to achieve your goals, and it will allow you to learn about yourself at a higher level, become more self assured and confident, and motivated. Self discipline is great but you need to understand why you should be disciplined.

Dude, this is way older than that. This is rehashed, applied Freud. It's just Id, Ego, and Superego, one of the few useful things the man came up with, when he wasn't waging war on Rome and all its descendants.
[–]reddzeppelin0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Well I think you're wrong not to give Freud credit for coming up with this, but obvious yes this is His idea with different words.
[–]chaseemall0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No, I AM giving Freud credit for coming up with this.
[–]reddzeppelin-1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You're not giving him credit for being the father of modern psychology.
[–]chaseemall1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Name anything he came up with that is currently used in modern psychological practice.
[–]reddzeppelin0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The ego? If they don't use that, I mean they should it explains a lot. Seems psych has gotten too pc to accept where it even started.
[–]chaseemall0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not a matter of political correctness, but of empirical verification...something which Freudian psychoanalytic theory is absolutely unable to bear.
The ego is one such construct that cannot be empirically verified and is only used (to my knowledge) in the clinical context of psychoanalysis.
If you want to know why Freud is actually brought up continuously, read the chapter on Psychoanalysis in Culture of Critique. It's a scholarly work, despite its appropriation by political undesirables.

Thank you for the post. How long have you been applying these principles to your goals, if you don’t mind me asking.

How useful meditation can be to reach the control of the all the stages of self, transform and deal with it ?

For anyone struggling with motivation, you might want to research gamification. It's something I've used in the past in various pursuits (before I ever heard the term or saw it in print). Unfortunately at some point the term became a bit of a buzzword so there's probably a ton of bullshit out there. I never took a scientific approach to it or anything, it just sort of came naturally to me based on my background and just the way I am. To avoid confusion, I will add that for me it had nothing to do with "gaming" girls specifically it was a more general application.
