I would say that you have to decide if you want to stay together or if you want to split. If you want to split, then you now what to do.

If you decide you want to stay together for the sake of your son, then there are actually things you can do to help the situation. Most verbally abusive people don't actually realize how nasty they're being. They're typically frustrated and feel out of control and insecure, and they get nastier the less they feel heard. So, if you want to stick it through, you will have to pretty much accept her being nasty, and then commit to never reacting to her verbal attacks with anything other than cool, collected, and rational responses, free of any retaliation or disrespect. Doesn't seem fair, but it does help to disarm the person and allow them to calm their fight-or-flight response. Do this for long enough (like 6 months to a year) and they may even learn a new pattern of behavior and conflict resolution. It does take a hell of a lot of emotional strength, though, and a ton of teeth-gritting resolution.
