Decent literature recommendations?

I can second Dostoevsky and Bukowski. Dostoevsky has a way making you feel the insanity of his protagonists... (at least I do); strange feeling but reading his novels really gives your brain a workout.

I love reading Bukowski. His writing is very simple a straight to the point which I find good for winding down before bed.

You can’t go wrong with classic authors like Dickens (Great expectations is one of my favourites), D.H. Lawrence (Sons and Lovers, Lady Chatterly’s Lover), Joseph Conrad (Heart of Darkness), Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn), Huxley (Brave New World), etc...

Lots of good stuff out there.

Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are real great. Not exactly masculine (though notes from Underground is) but really just fantastic works all around. If you read just one Russian work make it Brothers Karamazov.

Bukowski is gritty and masculine. Start with his first novel, Post Office, and if you like it go from there reading in order.

I read Fight Club just recently and it's certainly a modern classic.

Lolita is one of the prettiest and most horrific books you'll read. Nabokov's command of the English language is awe inspiring.

David Foster Wallace is almost hyper masculine with how absurdly intellectual his works are. Read a short story collection like Brief Interviews With Hideous Men and if you like that read Infinite Jest, my personal favorite novel of all time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest is a story of a sane man trying to get the other men to take their balls back from an authoritarian matriarch.

Have fun. Books have so much more depth than movies and TV shows could hope for. It's a cliche but the book is always better than the movie for a good reason.

Suicide Note -Mitchell Heisman

It is a book where a man utterly without bluepill fantasies and ideals analyzes western history, it's downfall and contradictions and the purpose or lack of one in an individuals life.

The Fate of Empires -Sir John Glubb.

An analysis of repetitive cyclical features of rising and falling civilizations and human behavior during each age. Makes it easy to understand where we as humans are and how actually redpilled you are.

This one is available as audiobook on youtube.

Old detective/crime novels: Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Jim Thompson, Dashiell Hammett

Started my first Elmore Leonard western recently and it's pretty good.

Genre literature is just inherently going to be more macho than "high art" literature, the hard part is finding genre literature that's also well-written, psychologically complex, etc. But there are writers out there who bridge the gap.

Edit: David Grann is really excellent for well-crafted contemporary journalistic non-fiction. If you like historical mysteries and obsessive characters, his work will really appeal. Similarly, the true crime classic, In Cold Blood is just a must-read for literally everyone.
