Your wing can just pretend he doesn't know you and stay close as if just checking his phone.

My wing uses his phone with a cheap pair of earphones with a microphone connected to it, and records himself this way. He just lets the earphones dangle on his chest.

I tried recording myself just with my phone, while holding it in my hand - was actually surprised by the sound quality and how much of the interaction I managed to capture this way.

Why just mic? Just get a pen camera and put it into your pocket or on your shirt collar. Camera + sound.

I personally use a phone setup in my front shirt pocket and it works in clubs. You can hear and see stuff. The only downside is having to be mindful of where my body is pointing to make sure I capture the other party.

No special equipment, and don't record anything, no evidence. Don't admit any wrong doing if confronted. Ever.

Have a Bluetooth earpiece, call you friend, let him listen in. Benefits of this approach is that he can tell you things to say in near real time, and he doesn't have to be close by, he can be at home.

This is not going to work in a bar/club, only more quiet places, day game.
