Don't go for the BIG isolation before you do smaller increments. At first, you can do smaller isolations, not even separations from their group, just turn them towards you and facing away from their group for a psychological isolation but not a physical one.

Also you need to work with her friends and obstacles to make sure they like you enough to not block you. A wingman would be useful, to keep the obstacles occupied while you run off with her friend.

Take them to the bar to buy them a drink, take them to the smoking area or take them somewhere quiet within the venue and than esculate from there. In the case that you can't get them seperated from their friends just make sure that they're turned just enough that most of their focus is on you and that they can't sneak glimpses at their friends because that'll make them more comfortable with you.

From what i read in your scenerio I think that your problem was that you didn't befriend their friends enough because if you made their friends like you and feel comfortable with you than they would have let you take her away OR her friend may have been insecure and didn't want to get seperated from your girl. If the latter was the case then you just got unlucky. Next time that happens get her number and just set it up another time.

try isolating them sooner, small stuff like 'oh hey help me pick a song on the jukebox/get some air/grab a drink/etc.'

then you get some alone time, you can escalate better. When in the heat of the moment, it is easier to skip out to bring them back.
