If he had restrained them by hand, sat on them, or even just pressed the metal rod against them in a threatening manner I'd be completely on his side. Unless one was reaching for a weapon, what he did once they were on the ground was just too far. However, I think it was at most "a year in prison and X amount of community service" too far, not "prison for a fucking decade" too far.

I just looked up New York State's Castle Doctrine, and in this state (where this happened) your right to pummel an intruder within an inch of his or her life only applies if you are in your own home or are a licensed cop, security guard, or something similar in a place you've been legally asked to occupy and protect.

In all honesty it doesn't bother me because the vast majority of the time I see it used it's perfectly justified within the context of what the person is saying.
