This driver did exactly the right thing. He defended himself when attacked, but avoided escalating the situation by stopping any physical confrontation once he was on no more immediate danger.

The women assailants could be considered "ratchet". The man defended himself and acted accordingly. Chivalry goes out the door once assaulted.
