The "femail" section of the Dailymail is always good for a chuckle, and this one doesn't disappoint.

But with more than 132,000 divorces every year in the UK, and second marriages accounting for 40 per cent of weddings, it seems growing numbers of men are keeping their options open in case their relationship ends and they want to start a family with a new partner.

‘Men are very aware that these days many relationships don’t work out,’ says relationship coach Susan Quilliam.

Men are catching on. Marriage is forever until your wife decides otherwise.

‘Also, I hear from men who worry that if their marriage ends their wife will take the children and leave them with little contact. This is a very real fear. Not having a vasectomy means there is still a chance they could be an active father in the future.’

How did that criticism of women's behavior get by the editor?

There are others, however, who argue that men who refuse to have a vasectomy are the ultimate commitment-phobes. Look online and you will find chatrooms full of women expressing anxiety that their partner’s refusal is a sign that they have only one foot in the marriage.

‘Even if men are in a long-term relationship, they want to keep their options open,’ he says. ‘Why should they have a vasectomy in one relationship, when they might eventually want to move on?

The real source of anxiety for these women who don't respect their husband's feelings about vasectomies isn't commitment - it's their desire to own their husband's fertility. Even if they divorce him, they don't want another woman to benefit from his fertility. They want the full claim to their ex-husbands resources without competition from the children of another woman.

Of course, they can't say this, so they rationalize their selfish desires as a fear of abandonment and betrayal. So much narcissistic manipulative behavior can be hidden under the cloak of female victimization.

I recently decided not to have a vasectomy when my wife went off the pill. While I am fully committed to my marriage, my fertility is one thing I will not give up. I think the odds of my wife divorcing me are very low, but the fear of divorce was still a factor in my decision. If my wife divorces me, my fertility is one thing I'll be able to walk away with.
