Honestly, I think it is a very tricky problem, especially if you expand the question to deal with intersex people. It's very clear that the mechanism of dividing people in sports into leagues of biological aptitude is very crude.

I think it should be based on performance. Does a trans woman's biochemistry still allow her to perform on a male level, or not? What about Trans men? If they perform on a different level than those born to a specific gender I would say it's fair to compare it with steroid use, and to take that in account when creating an equal playing field for those participating in events.

They should compete with whichever gender they identify with.

It'd be like telling a cis-gendered woman to run in a men's competition, giving the message "no, you're whatever gender we say you are".

Women are at a natural disadvantage in athletic competition because estrogen does not promote muscular and skeletal growth as testosterone does.

Trans women have an advantage over cis women, having spent most or all of their developmental years as male. Trans men have an advantage over cis women too, as they are currently taking testosterone supplements. However, both of these groups are at a disadvantage compared to cis men, who both developed with and currently have testosterone.

Having separate leagues for each gender permutation would be the most fair. But it might be hard to find enough participants for the trans leagues.

So long as I'm not paying for it there can be a rule that says only black women can be on teams in a sports league.

But if I am paying for it then I wouldn't want any artificial separations. Everyone plays on the field with everyone else.

I think they should get to play in the league of whatever gender they identify as...if it's someone born as a boy but identifies as female, let them play on the girl's team and same goes for the other way around.

I would think that any trans (any original gender) should be disqualified from competing because of the use of hormones to unnaturally mimic the desired gender.

Perhaps the larger ethical conundrum, how do you handle the naturally occurring human chimeras XXY or XYY redundant chromosomal pairs.

Men are physically better at the vast majority of sports. This is just a fact. If trans-women were allowed in women's leagues hey would totally dominate. The reverse is not true. So it is basic decency to allow trans-men to play against men since this doesn't cause major problems. But the reverse is not reasonable since it would destroy the sport.

Pumping someone full of a steady supply of drugs and elective surgery to produce artificially engineered genders. There is no such thing as an actual natural transgender. Unless someone has witnessed a person miraculously naturally go from a boy to a girl when they hit puberty it doesn't exist. No one gets to choose their gender. Why not choose your species as well? There's no difference. Enough with the artificial gender crap.
