Be careful with Tor for two reasons. Tor is great for target hardening but it isn't infallible, if someone really wants to find you Tor won't stop them, and second, most doxxing occurs without any IP information at all.

If you're using the Firefox package, use a throwaway/alt that you ONLY log into using Tor Browser (just a separate firefox directory with plugins already set up for you.) If you don't keep everything separated there's no point.

Consider Tor to be a target hardening strategy, similar to a lock pick. If you are among a group of targets you'll be skipped over, but if someone REALLY wants to come after you, it's far from fullproof.

TOR will hide your IP pretty well but keep in mind the recent Doxxing was not some sophisticated hack. He was ratted out by redditors.

If you don't want your real name associated with everything you post on /MR your first line of defense should be to have an alt you only use for /MR. Then don't give out info that can be used to narrow down your real identity when using that alt.

Just make sure you never use Tor for any kind of banking or shopping.

Also, reddit isn't going to release your IP address to anyone short of the feds for actual criminal activity that has been subpoenaed. VA's identity was far from sercret. He went to reddit meetups, posed for pictures, and probably had thousands of people that knew.

If you don't want your personal life to be met with your online life, then don't post personal shit online.

Pick an obscure name that cannot be tied to you personally or any of your other public online accounts (i.e. your reddit name should not be the same as your facebook name, twitter handle, names on other forums etc). Mine is the location of my favourite fishing destination for example. Also, try googling your user name before you create it. There are other people with the same username as me, which will through would-be doxxers off my scent.

Make sure you have made your facebook page private, so only friends can view it. Especially when it comes to place of employment.

Choose a password that has Caps, symbols and numbers.

Never post information in your history that can identify you: this includes name of your employers, school, university, college, charities you volunteer for, clubs you're a member of, your name, your siblings, your suburb, identifying photos.

i've been doxxed before and the person who did it just used google. don't use the same username on other sites and if you have an uncommon or unusual name don't use it online.

This is stupid FUD. People are getting doxxed here at Reddit because they provide enough information to allow people to identify them. Reddit is aggressively pseudonymous. If you provide no identifying information, you're safe here.

Tor isn't going to do a damn thing against these kinds of attacks.
