33 deaths? Hardly a number with any statistical significance. How about the people who point out all the flaws in anti-male studies not share studies with even bigger ones?

A recently published New Zealand police report reveals that mothers are responsible for almost half of all child murders. The analysis of 33 child deaths that were the subject of a police review found that mothers were to blame for 15 of the fatalities. They included six children who had been killed by their mothers before they had then killed themselves, five newborn babies and two children who had died from physical abuse. These figures mirror a 2006/2007 homicide report published by the Australian Institute of Criminology which found that half of all child murders in Australia during that period were at the hands of the biological mother.

The article presents a bunch of information but I'm curious about what one can infer from the information, or what the underlying causes of such a phenomenon might be. As a feminist and a skeptic I won't rule out the research presented here but I want to know what we can say about it, and continue finding additional data to support the conclusions drawn. In addition I'd want to know, assuming this is correct, what does it mean for women's relationship with their children, and how society perceives mothers and motherhood.

I think there could be positive implications for feminism from this study. Perhaps it will make us question the status quo - why are women seemingly given all the responsibility for child-rearing? Where are the fathers of these children and what events are keeping them from being able to care for their spawn? It really does make a lot of sense that mothers are the majority of abusers and killers, they certainly do spend the most time with their children, and probably often must spend excessive time caring for them alone. Perhaps if this is true, and becomes accepted, men will finally be socially conditioned to take on their fair burden of child-rearing. Just some possibilities.

Because they win majority of custody, but anyways yea, this is just evidence of the long-established fact that men and women are assholes at just about the same rates.
