Not being from the region myself and not understanding the local social dynamic I'm unwilling to support this topic. I don't want to display the same reactionary behaviour some feminists have when confronted with a situation where I'm so out of my element that I couldn't even begin to understand the social dynamics of the situation.

I will say that a whole lot of shit is fucked up in some parts of the middle east though and no one has it good (outside of religious zealots) in those areas.

The people defending the attackers usually do it with "implicit violence", which is total BS. Unless somebody is already holding a gun to your head, violence can hardly be assumed as easily.

Who says this Cleric was going to get them beaten up for dressing too scantily? Could've been he was just trying to keep them from getting thrown into jail by the morality police.

I doubt that it actually helped these women in any way btw. They beat up a holy man, if they get caught they are pretty much dead.

I have no doubt they would be goings nuts right now. It was a completely unreasonable reaction. She was free to disagree and move on. I can understand the frustration that women like her may feel in the Middle East, but that doesn't excuse her actions. A female Jehovah's Witness approached me the other day offering literature and whatnot. I didn't punch her in the face and proceed to hospitalize her because I didn't appreciate her suggestion on how to live my life and I doubt anyone would be hailing me a hero if I did. The sexism there is an excuse. Not a justification.

The question is, that's the law in Iran. FTA:

Now, is that law unfair? I think it is very unfair. So are many U.S. feminist laws, the very same laws Jill Filipovic likes so much.

In the end, she enjoys the same things that she hate. But we already know that.

Please join the forum, if you have the time, and post a comment or two pointing out this kind of hypocrisy.

It's not about defending religion, but about being consistent. These same people would probably be up in arms if a man laid a pinky finger on a woman.

Meh, I feel bad for both the woman and the cleric. It's hard to deny that women are oppressed in her culture. At the same time, the cleric has also been manipulated by his culture to think what he is doing is right (and required).
