I was at a theater last night watching a movie with my friends and was sexually assaulted by a guy who had scanned the empty theater for a seat and chose beside me. After the incident I was too scared to respond in public and ran to the front hall and called the cops. It took them over an hour for them to get down there to talk to me. I was alone outside the theater waiting and he actually walked out alone and started walking towards me about 10 minutes after I had called. I immediately took refuge inside of a coffee shop near people that I knew. Throughout the hour that it took for one cruiser to get there I saw him 3 times. Once scanning the outside of the movie theater, once driving around the lot, and once again driving around the lot I was near. When the cop came I gave a description and he left. He told me I could have "handled the situation".

My friend (who is a girl) was once forced to call from being harassed by a stranger downtown. They rushed over and were there in 10 minutes with sirens blazing. They stayed with her the whole time, comforted her and talked to her about how she was. I don't understand why my case wasn't as severe as my friends. Was I expected to be able to control the situation?

I'm still pretty shooken up about the scenario and probably won't be back to normal for a while but it just hurts that my case wasn't important enough for urgency.

TLDR; Sexually assaulted, single cop came hour after allowing perpetrator to get away. Said I could handle it.
