On women "needing" a daughter....

As a guy, I want a son. I know it is not the most egalitarian thing to say, but I'd prefer a son over a daughter.

I would love to have a smaller version of me I could teach the way the world works to.

I don't like it when people say 'took you 3 tries, but you finally got a son' or 'finally got a daughter'. But I guess it comes from a human want to have balance. My Aunt has 4 kids, and number 4 was an accident, but it turned out to be a girl (the only girl). Nobody said diddily squat about finally having a daughter. Not that having another son would've made it stay an accident.

I think this sort of dialog, wherein one steps back and analyzes the thoughtless/automatic commentary that defines what our culture values and devalues, is the meat of any civil rights movement. Much more so than analysis of hard facts.

Automatic, daily, thoughtless conversational exchanges that form the background noise of our civilisation reinforce a shared belief system through repetition. Repetition is a very powerful rhetorical technique. Much more powerful than quoting hard numbers to prove or disprove target assertions. So powerful, I would argue, that hard facts only matter once you have set up a counter-repetition to nullify the target so you can even be heard in the first place. Some things have to be believed to be seen.

I have 2 brothers (3 boys) and honestly if I had a sister I'd probably have been better educated at treating women superiorly than men. /sarc....but seriously my dad would have made sure of it
