Mostly it's a disruption and reduces our ability to clearly state our points of view. It can also control saliency of articles. If for example, all that makes front page are articles complaining about women behaving badly, versus articles that discusses something like the effects of false accusations on men then it creates a specific point of view.

Your interesting article disappears from the front page, or never makes it there.

Some people post in the hope that other people actually read their posts, or the articles the reference. So yes, I care if my posts and comments get voted out of people's sight.

The idea that people need votebots to downvote you is laughable. Face it, you guys: you asked that people listen to you, and they are. They listen, they find you contemptible, and they downvote. The system works.
