In New Zealand, it is illegal to discipline a child through violence eg. smacking. Restraining a child from hurting themselves or others is legal however.

I agree with it. As a trained nanny, it was illegal for me to use violence anyway, now parents are required to learn and use more effective forms of discipline too.

Of course spanking a child is violence. If i spanked Hulk Hogan i'd get charged with assault - while in a hospital bed i assume - but if i spanked someone a quarter my size that would be okay? Bullshit.

I absolutely agree that hitting a person is violence. However I do not agree that courts are likely to provide an effective and equitable solution to this issue.

I agree that it can be violence. If you can't get your children in line without spanking them then you are probably a shitty / lazy parent who might want to start paying some fucking attention to your fucktrophy.
