Claiming that she wasn't being asked for sex is obfuscating the issue, that's what.

How do you see an issue there in the first place?

The whole point is that he asked in an awkward way that would make most women uncomfortable. In the future, he should try to avoid that.

Uhuu. So I guess men now have to be able to read women's minds in order to make them not uncomfortable. Yeah, that'll work.

Again: This happend in Dublin, which is in Ireland, which is part of Europe which is much less obsessed with all the nasty sex things than most North Americans are.

It's interesting that the dividing line about this seems to run straight through the Atlantic, where most Europeans are scratching their heads wondering what the fuck is going on while most of the American counter parts see her barely escaping rape.

If you can't see how cornering a strange woman in an elevator in a strange country at 4 AM and asking for sex would make her uncomfortable, you lack empathy.

Cornering? Bit more melodrama please. Oh, and that "stranger" apparently was sitting with her in the bar for a few hours, so it's not like it was a guy dashing into the elevator, covered in black clothing and wearing a face mask.

Her feeling uncomfortable is one thing, to blow it out of proportion though is another and that's where the problem lies.

Nobody has a right not to be made "uncomfortable" by strangers, simple as that.

Yes, part of being a tactful, empathetic human being is trying to understand how your actions affect people.

Oh, that's a good one. How do you think the guy feels right about now? Or how do you think Stef feels after being attacked by the keynote speaker of a conference while sitting in the audience?

Oh let me guess, that's completely different and it's both their own fault for being felt uncomfortable.

Ah yes, liberated Europe, where strangers fuck in the street 24/7. Get outta here with that, asking you to evaluate how your actions affect others isn't a form of oppression.

I doubt you'll ever get why that puzzles so many people. But keep going on your crusade.

In literal terms, yes she was asked for coffee but we have to take into consideration that it's much more likely he was asking her to have coffee with him with the intention of later having sex with her than not. I'm not saying it's not possible he was just asking her for coffee and nothing more and there's certainly nothing wrong with asking someone out for coffee, or sex for that matter. If the person doesn't float your boat you just say "no thank you" and move on with your life instead she decided she was going to let the whole world know about the "elevator incident" where she felt "uncomfortable".

In regards to innocent until proven guilty...guilty of what? The guy didn't do anything wrong, he's not on trial or at least he shouldn't be but leave it to people like Rebecca Watson to turn an innocent "Hey would like some coffee (with possible underlying intent to have consensual sex)?" into some sort of witch hunt to make every man out there know not to talk to a woman, look at her or say or do anything that may make her feel "uncomfortable". I don't know what kind of world this woman wants to live in, but you can count me out.
