What really pisses me off about this is, what if you're innocent? You either have to admit your guilt for a 'rehabilitation program,' which eliminates any chance you have for appeal (you incriminated yourself), or, you get more than double the prison sentence. Fuck everything about this.

My grandfather was a former Iowa supreme court justice. He would be turning over in his grave if he knew about this. I am so ashamed of my state.

A perspective I am turning over in my head; how is this different from a plea bargain? If someone agrees to plead guilty before your trial, they often receive a lesser sentence than someone who fights and loses. No one seems to be up in arms over that, so why all the outrage over something which is essentially another chance to take the same opportunity?

Awful, but hardly specific to men (or sex offenders). Same ruling will apply to people of both genders committing all sorts of crimes.

While this may be an issue, once again, it's not a mens rights issue.. a woman could be put into the exact same circumstances.

So what this does is prevents innocent people from getting out earlier unless they can appeal [because innocent individuals are probably going to get out sooner then the average through this program], and it prevents guilty people from appealing.

So it seems to me like they are just trying to reduce the number of appeals, and invariably punish the subset of inmates who are more likely to be innocent. Sounds like a good policy.

I guess I wouldn't mind as much had the admission granted them immunity, because I can see the rehabilitation factor in making people admit their crimes. But to completely dismiss the possibility that someone is innocent, or that their charges could be dismissed in an appeal, is a travesty.

It's dumb either way. You really don't need people to confess in jail, but the intent is so that they nullify any chance of an appeal. Either you appeal, maintain that you're innocent, and risk staying in jail longer, or go through the rehabilitation program and remove all doubt.

From what I can see, this encourages people NOT to go through the program. However, it seems like the unwritten opposing argument that it will reduce the number of appeals prevailed.

In law class i watched a video of 2 cops interogating a 14 year old boy, who had found his sister dead. He was crying after hours in the room with them screamign at him. One of the cops was able to convince the boy that it was ok that he didn't remember because he obviously had multiple personality disorder, and one of his other personalities killed his sister. The boy broke down crying saying oh my god how could i have killed my sister i love her so much. After a ton of hours in the interogation room , the cops finally tortured a confession out of the kid and now he's in jail.

Honestly, male rapists should be just be shot, so who cares about this. Don't forget, men are privileged. At least he can walk down the street and not worry about being raped. After he gets out of prison anyway, although he should be in there for life if there was any justice. Rape is rape, "third-degree sexual abuse" probably means he gang-raped a 10 year old girl (by himself no less) and the misogynist lawyer bargained it down.

He was already tried and found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He has already appealed the conviction and lost.

He has no right to get out of prison early. If the prison wants to reward good behavior with early release, why is it unreasonable to require inmates getting that privilege to take part in rehabilitative programs or take responsibility for their crimes?

Rehabilitation is a progessive-based industry. Offers lots of employment to people otherwise unemployable. If we simply got tough with sex offenders and stopped coddling them we'd get results.
