It isn't "the check" in the specific, it is "the check" in the general/abstract. It is the "what's mine is her's and what's her's is her's" issue.

Men have to "pick up the check" in many other ways. We are expected to figure out where to eat and play the game of "well how about x? no? okay how about y? no? what about z? no? .." The idea of women actually cooking the dinner just seems utterly lost to the sands of time. Now it is just another hell-game men have to play - "where to eat?" or if the men want to cook, then it's another hell-game of "what to eat? x? no? y? no? z? no? want to cook instead? no? ..."

There's the whole provider issue, the extremely one-sided issue of alimony & child support, the draft issue, the men-should-sacrifice for women issue (aka "women & children first"), the asking them out first issue, the who-drives issue, and on and on.

My girlfriend does this frequently without me asking; it goes without saying that I appreciate it immensely because she's making an effort to contribute her fair share (and plenty of times even more than her share).

I don't understand women who are comfortable with being paid for all the time. Either you're incredibly self-centered and entitled, or you're putting yourself into a position of debt, and relationships shouldn't be about who owes who what. Even friendship. I pick up the check all the time, even though I can't really afford it, and I have to be really comfortable with someone, whom I know knows that I'll pick it up next time, to let someone else pick it up.

i watch my friend adamantly refuse to let his girlfriend pay for anything. if he does not have money h will sit there and not go out while his girlfriend begs him to use her money, he gets super hard headed and continues to refuse. I get free dinner somehow this view is entrenched with men too.
