Women on the other hand aren't told to have babies or their not women. Women aren't told to woman up and take a nurturing role or whatever. And I especially never hear the phrase real women respect men.

This is all moving pretty far away from heroic actions. I agree with you, but I think there are a series of interlocking mechanisms at play. I brought up bodily functions because that's the first thing someone else answered above.

If you look at it as a worldwide cultural pressure for men to be sacrificial, it is an insult. On the other hand, if you look at it as an issue of how we perceive maturity and adulthood, it becomes an issue of respect. We don't treat children as though they are mature adults. The boy acted in a way that was mature beyond his years, and therefore deserves the respect that is conveyed by the term 'man'. 'Woman', to me, doesn't really contain the same tinge of respect, neither does 'lady' or any other gendered title I can think of.

I don't know the answer here, but I do think that calling a 13-year-old a 'man' for saving someone's life is somewhat different to telling men to 'man up'. It plays into the same pressure, I'm sure, but it is hard for me to not want to grant the 13-year-old an adult kind of respect. 'Boy' doesn't work too well in that sense.
