TLDR : Drug cartels are not sexist. They'll kill anyone based on job performance not gender.

It is interesting, in a darkly morbid way, that they did this somewhat professionally - they didn't try to isolate her as a woman. They didn't rape her, or do anything misogynistic - they simply killed her.

The message is clear there - It wasn't that she was a woman. It was that she was a police chief who didn't cooperate.

The original article about her made a big deal about (a) her being a woman, and (b) no men were willing to take the job because it presented too much danger.

As if to say, "Woman goes where men too scared to tread."

Therefore...

I read this headline as merely a continuation of that earlier story... which can also now be read, "Woman takes job which men wisely avoided... and suffers the consequences."

Yes, you are.That being said, the men weren't stupid enough to take that job, since they know what was going to happen to them. She took it, maybe thinking because she was a woman it wouldn't happen to her. Guess again lady, aint equality grand.
