A man, suffering from liver failure, owed $30,000 in back child support. They took most of his paycheck (his children were adults). He couldn't feed himself; his lack of nutrition and illness were killing him. Their response: "We don't care; go ahead and die."

Now, isn't that strange? When she had a fat lip, it was a felony and I was going to jail. But when they finally agreed and realized that she tried to stab me in the neck... it stopped being a crime at that point, it was a mental health issue.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) has been lobbying against Shared Parenting bills in many states. Why would NOW do that? What is more equal than shared parenting?

LOL

I agree with many of the points this article is trying to make, but the article is obnoxious. All men are wage earners and all women are housewives, so divorced men should be entitled to "weekly cleaning, a hot meal 7 nights a week, and 'romantic companionship' services"?

[–]Maschalismos 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Human. Re-read the article. at several points he says he (or she) as the larger wage earner.

The author does make an attempt to sound like it's a discrepancy between breadwinner/homemaker, but in all of his examples, it's a female>male illustration. I'm inclined to agree most of his arguments, but I'm not sure why he made the attempt not sound misogynistic when the rest of the article is clearly aimed and arguing that men are the new victims.

If the author wants to gain some credibility, I would like to see some good examples of his implied argument where the breadwinner was the female, and got screwed over by a stay at home dad.

Those are really hard to find, I'd wager.

How is it misogyny? Can you show a clear hatred of women from the post?

I see a clear hatred of the system, and a view that is biased towards men, sure. But I don't see hatred of women.

You're right, I was perhaps a bit hasty in the use of the word.

[–]ignatiusloyola 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was definitely just an example used. I didn't read it as "all men are wage earners, etc..." I read it as a primary earner versus secondary earner issue. Scenarios that are gender based are a product of the commonality of the situation and our language. As an honors English graduate friend of mine once told me, the pronouns used in a generic scenario always follow whatever gender expectations there can be. This is the nature of our language, not sexism.

Where does it say or imply that even a little bit? I think the author is just really frustrated with the current disparity of divorce in the US that is enforced by law.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is obnoxious, but I think it's just trying to paint things in a different light than it is normally seen. Everyone is used to the "richer" partner having to pay alimony/etc, because without it, they would not have the same quality of life post-marriage.

This is the first comparison I've seen that points out that money is not the only thing that can be lost in a divorce, but it is the only thing that gets "shared".

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why not?

[–]Omnicrola 1 point2 points3 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point he is trying to make is a valid one, but he's using a stereotyped image of a married couple to illustrate a point about how marriage is no longer that stereotyped image. Which doesn't really help his point.

Really well written article! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the post.

I would like to add that the divorce rate is 50%, but don't let that fool anyone. Marriage isn't nearly that successful. There are millions upon millions of "zombie" marriages out there. I'm in an entirely loveless God-forsaken marriage that I would love to end right now, but child-custody and divorce laws are just too awful to comprehend for a working man. The abduction of men's children through "family" courts and the enslavement of working men through post-marital "support" is the greatest civil and human rights issue of our time.

And BTW Chris Rock is right about OJ. OJ, the marital slave, killed his master because, well, he was her slave. This happens all the time. Ask your local police officers. They'll tell you. I love how Cris Rock can make us all laugh while making a serious social point. You can't help but question the insidious nature of divorce/alimony after watching that clip.

End slavery. End marriage.
