The sad thing is the Valediction may well not be the militant feminist type. She's probably just heard this lie so often that she believes it.

In her Valedictorian address, Emma Shaw Crane said, "one in three women will be sexually assaulted by someone else at this university."

In 2008, there were approximately 35,000 undergraduate and post-graduate students at UC Berkeley -- approximately 54% of whom were female, or roughly 18,900. Thus, according to Ms. Crane, approximately 6,300 women will be sexually assaulted. How does this compare with actual reports of alleged rapes at UC Berkeley? In 2007, there were just seven reported rapes on the campus of UC Berkeley. Of those seven reported rapes, there were two arrests, and only one of the persons arrested was a student or affiliated with the school.

Can someone link to the origins of the original 1 in (blank) statistic? If I remember correctly, the reason the number looked so staggering was because the questions asked made very broad definitions of sexual assault and rape. (ie, did you ever have sex when you didn't really feel like it)

It would be interested to know where the original study came from and what questions were asked.

It really annoys me that people don't question facts they're presented with, especially percentage type figures. If it sounds too awful to be true, it's often not true.

And this doesn't just apply to rape. Whenever I hear politicians quote 1 in x type figures on the TV, I stop to think about it and it's obviously BS.

People need to sanity check figures. If 1 in 3 woman got raped during their time at Berkeley the university would insist on a DNA sample being held on everyone prior to admission, there would be thousands of CCTV cameras on campus, each dorm room would have multiple panic buttons, and girls and boys would probably be forcibly segregated.
