Reasonable people that I know are outraged over this ridiculous inequality. Many of my female friends are absolutely dumbfounded to hear that a) false rape charges are so prevalent and b) that false rape accusers go unpunished. We just have to tell people. It's a strange topic to bring up in conversation, but sometimes you just have to do it.

It is because extreme feminists aren't happy with merely equal rights, they want to do away with men altogether. Search "Are Men Necessary" on Google and you will come up with millions of hits, a lot of which have nothing to do with Maureen Dowd's ridiculous book.

Look, sorry if my ilk has given you the wrong impression. But it's a strawman. Don't believe it.

Sure, there are some women who don't want or need a man in their lives. Just like some men don't want or need women in theirs. Personal choice.

But to think that it's an honest and embraced movement within feminism is, frankly, wrong.

Speak to actual feminists. Most women I know are feminists (even those who don't use the term, but simply emmbrace the idea that men and women are equals) , and most of us have very significant men in our lives. Most of us love men, lust after men (or a man), appreciate the men in our lives, try to make things work with the men in our lives, etc.

You are wanted, and you are necessary - and not in the sense of "to take out the garbage" or silly crap like that, but in the sense of "you make our lives whole. We love you and we need you."

Feminism has more to do with superiority then equality;

I don't even know where this meme comes from, but it's a popular one in MRA.

But it isn't true. Feminism is not about female superiority, anymore than men's liberation movements are inherently about male superiority (and sure, there might be a branch of conservative MRA out there who is all about getting male "privilege" back). Most people involved in men's liberation know that most men actually didn't benefit from those "privileges" anyhow.

Feminism sprung up from an age in which women couldn't own their own bank accounts and wouldn't be hired for careers. Feminism changed the culture so that women are now assumed to be equal. (I beat up a boy when we were 8 and 10 because he kept insisting that "everyone knows girls are inferior". This was the "common knowledge" in 1970.)

By the way, the source of my confusion must that I've actually read many many many feminist works and none of them say anything of the sort.

You folks out there who hold this notion: where does it come from? and how many actual feminist writings have you read? You're rewriting history and I'm asking you to be clear about that.

Yes, perhaps, but this latter movement did not spring up in time, whereas second wave feminism did, and 15 years before any humanist movement. Furthermore, all the various liberation movements of the 70s and 80s were informed by the lessons learned in early feminism, due to practices such as consciousness-raising and support groups.

I wouldn't have wanted the gay rights movement to have to wait either. The Stonewall Riots in 1969 didn't wait around for a humanist movement to start pushing the idea of gay rights either. Without a core group of interested people, the basic notions of liberation and equality don't start spreading through the larger population.

When would this humanist movement have occurred? Similarly for men's liberation. There are still large numbers of people who don't think that men are oppressed and it requires a core group of people to repeatedly stress that idea before people start knowing and realizing.

I agree with you about a number of the faults of feminism: it doesn't necessarily lend itself to inclusiveness, there have been historical excesses, and there still feminists who are caught in their own struggle and don't see gender in a broader frame, thus denying that gender roles hurt men as well. What you're saying is a good lesson to be learned for any liberation movement: don't be exclusive, get allies on board and use them - because they sit outside of the oppression and they can often see things clearly from a differing perspective.

Just an addendum though: I use the term "feminism" as many other men and women do who promote equality. As the saying goes, "Feminism is the Radical Notion that Women are People". And the idea that Feminism is, instead, about female supremacy appears to me to be a lie propagated by conservatives who want to roll back women's rights.

Furthermore, I think feminism and MRA are extremely compatible. Clearly, there are places where both men and women are oppressed in tandem:

Freeing women up from housework and child-raising and allowing women to have careers should (speaking as a goal) free men up to be care-takers, even stay-at-home fathers, if they choose. Men being involved with raising children should pave the way for joint custody to be the default. Men being involved with raising children should stop the default assumptions that women get custody and men pay alimony. Women being allowed into the military should free up men from being cannon fodder. (And this is just a partial list.)

Anyhow, I didn't mean to make this as long as all that. Thanks for writing.

I have enjoyed this interplay between you and feuerdis. I was particularly glad to see you chime in with your first post in this thread, because I too am a woman who greatly admires men in much the way that you described. I have always considered myself a humanist rather than a feminist, because i find so much of feminism to be set against men, I find that while the struggle for equality has archived some significant goals, it has also opened the door for different forms of inequality. Part of the problem as I see it is that masculinity and femininity, much as their dance is well shown in the yin-yang, are equally ballanced, yet counterbalanced in form. So much of feminism has tried to iron out the differences between these primal forces, all to the honor of leveling some metaphorical playing field. These are forces, more than they are genders, for all people have both aspects within them, regardless of sex or orientation.

I don't think you need to be a "feminist" to believe that men and women are equal, and I'm not talking about people like you. You sound like a wonderful and reasonable person. There is no question, however, that there are "feminists" who hold this view; I am not saying that such a notion is embraced by feminists (note that I did say "extreme" feminists), I am only stating that it exists.

Well, I'm not always wonderful nor reasonable, as some here can attest, but thank you.

There are feminists who hold that view, certainly, but it isn't a feminist view (or even a view embraced by a "wing" of feminism, from what I can tell. It always seems to just be various individuals. And maybe a movement is made up of individuals, sure, but I don't think its a widely held belief.)

By the way, I did google "Are men necessary", rather than simply responding, and you will be happy to note that in the first 3 pages, there are only 2 links not related to Dowd's book. The first such link rejects the notion. The second such link simply uses the byline to introduce people to a 1917 fiction (scifi?) novel on the subject.

I haven't gotten further, but you might be cheered to know that most people actually think "Of course men are necessary. What a dumb question".

I think that's the original definition of feminism. Back in the 70s, when the 'second wave' of feminism took off, this was not an accepted notion.
