It's so sad that this sort of sexism is so easily "validated" by a couple of statistics. These parents telling their children that pregnant women, mothers and grandmothers are "safe" adults to look for when they're lost is hardly different than telling them to look for adults of another race because most violence is intra-racial.

What really bothers me about this entire debate, what the original post merely alludes to, is the cost of separating men from children.

Children want to be around men, need to be around men. And vice versa. Sequestering children from men is psychologically harming those children and results in often life-long dysfunction. Period. Bly says that whenever a boy is not being admired by an older man, he is being harmed.

Not to mention the strange "magical" conversion we expect boys and girls to go through, without any guidance, to become men and women.

At what point does a woman change from viewing men as predators to men as mates and fathers? Wait, don't bother answering that...

At what point does a boy change from viewing men as evil, violent, unpredictable predators to viewing himself as an evil, violent, unpredictable predator?

Answer me this: considering the portrait of men we paint today... Why in the Hell would ANYONE want to be a man?

Assuming that most males you see day-to-day will be of the "I'd gladly bash a pedophile's head into the pavement" variety of person, I don't think kids should be raised to see males as dangerous. More likely, they'll be of the "I'm kinda busy, buzz off" variety.

Creating a blanket statement like 'go find the nearest grandma because she safer' isn't the way to go

They shouldn't be advising a child to go see ANY stranger. End of story. The best advice should be to set up a rescue plan. IE; I tell my child to met up at say, the car, or out front Woolworths if we get separated.

Telling a child to just go see a select person in society is just plain dumb, irregardless of who they are.
