I've been noticing some odd stuff happening in women-centric subreddits. Maybe not odd, I guess, but still interesting. I apologize for the title because it implies the internet at large, but for discussion purposes it's easiest to just stick with the platform here that is Reddit.

I've seen a consistent belief - even from people I know IRL and post in these subreddits - that removing sexism against women isn't a priority and "no one cares" about the myriad of subreddits that explicitly hate women.

The thing is, I don't think they are necessarily wrong. The incel community was allowed to stay on Reddit far too long. Redpill and blackpill subs are plentiful and have steady traffic. Even theoretically well-meaning subs like MTGOW have trouble escaping from a stream of hate that's directed toward women. All of that is, at this moment, allowed to more or less exist on reddit as long as these people remain in their insular communities and abide by site rules (again, more or less).

Now, these people have a point. Misogyny exists on this site in large amounts and it's not getting a lot of outcry. Where I think the argument starts to fall apart is this belief that misandry is a priority and we somehow care about hate towards men more than hate towards women.

I mean, when you look at it, the same problem exists in reverse and is growing steadily. Subreddits like FemaleDatingStrategy ballooned seemingly overnight and the vitriol there is leeching into other well-intentioned subreddits that aren't prepared to delve into whether or not a user is making posts in good faith or not. This is all allowed on Reddit - with the same sort of posts as the extreme misogynists calling for the death of women.

It's not hard to see hate being present without a big deal being made about it. It's everywhere. But it's not selective, and there's a point where everyone just can't care anymore. I doubt that women are up in arms about FDS or TrollXChromasomes or GenderCritical while it was still a thing. They don't personally care about the hate being perpetuated about men because they aren't near those subreddits. I'm sure if you asked most women they would say these subs promote hate and need to be removed, but they aren't making that a crusade. Yet there are demands for men to crusade on removing misogyny from the site. Most men feel the same way as women - I absolutely want redpill and blackpill subs removed from, but I'm not about to make it the centerpoint of my existence online.

Maybe that needs to change, I guess. Maybe we need to be more vocal about our oppositions to any type of hate, I don't know. It certainly wouldn't hurt, and hopefully it would net us some support in return. What are your thoughts?

Edit: it's an important point but I am hoping to stay away from the whole "mods don't even recognize hate against men as a legitimate issue". I know that's important but I'm hoping to discuss more about users and less about mods. That horse has been beaten into a pancake.
