Has any research done about class mobility that includes the combination of assets in marriage?

Whatever the intent behind it, women do change socio-economic classes more often than men, both upward and downward. I suppose that's what happens if men are earning the major share of the household income (1998 paper below)

But it apparently happens less today vs 1950s and 1960s, despite men still earning on average more than women. The article below notes more marriages within socioeconomic classes, vs earlier years.

Interestingly, though, on the income is greater in men thing - that seems to be mainly at the higher end of the income curve.

One could make the case that as long as women are largely marrying only "upward" (which they are: in the vast majority of relationships, the man makes more money than the woman), by definition all marriages are class advancement for the woman. Class is just a harder thing to notice in this era because class hierarchies aren't as clearly defined as they were in, say, the Victorian era. But that doesn't mean it isn't there. It wouldn't be possible for women to spend more money than they make, on average, if that weren't the case.

That said, its a catch 22 because one could argue that men who go full MGTOW, focusing on their career instead of women have more social mobility despite not having the option to marry up by virtue of making more money in the first place and not loosing it. That said, this only realistically happens in a dramatic way for a lucky few: genius inventors, entrepreneurs, etc. And one has to balance that with that fact that men tend towards the extreme ends of the spectrum for that very same reason: there are also many more dirt poor men than women.

Yep. It's completely messed up. Which is why I refuse to marry down. I am not an ATM just because I was cursed into being a Man. Marrying up would be an ideal for me; and considering that I am better with kids than any woman I met, I should be the one to marry up. But if I can't do that; then I will marry same. But I've been heavily criticized for that.

Women have a one sided defintion of equality and we need to socialize against hypergamy. I had a tough upbringing and went through a lot to reach where I am. No way am I going to marry someone who had it easier and brings less to the table.

I don’t think many women today in the US and Europe do that. Most of the time when it happens in more developing and less developed countries, it’s in some part, arranged by the family or the product of violence (afaik).

Women who stay things like that in the US and Europe either mature or stay single especially since men struggle to provide for themselves.
