Two German states announce hotline for male DV victims

In the past men have been treated less than favorably by domestic violence hotlines, and dv resources in general. That's because a lot of the people who staff them see it as a kind of women's club. Men -- most men, anyway -- are just nasty, evil people who oppress women. And women would never behave that way towards men.

The national DV hotline in the US has officially supported male victims since at least 2014, but many of their employees are noticeably hostile towards men who call in. They'll ask them what they did to make their spouse mad at them, and sometimes they'll even hang up on them.

In Australia, men who call are treated like abusers in denial, and they get counted in statistics for male-on-female domestic violence ("we had x number of female victims call in, and y repentant male abusers call in").

You can even see this in DV subs around Reddit whenever they get men posting there (although this has been getting better recently).

A good solution might be to ask the person calling what their gender is and then patch them through to someone who is trained or sympathetic to them. That way there's only one number and everyone can get help. If they're not doing a good job though, one solution is to just make another one.
