If only average liberal normies ever read anything like that. The general ill informed assumption that feminism was/is just like the civil rights movement but for women (non violent, fighting legal discrimination, universalist, etc.), is a massive problem because gatekeepers to popular audiences (the lib majority journalist and media class) grant feminism a monopoly on gender issues. The kneejerk positive mental image that many normies have of it, and the reality of its intellectual tradition, goals, and real world actions could not be farther apart. An honest SPLC would be treating vast swaths of the feminist movement including NOW as female supremacist, which is exactly what many of them are.

I've had a lot of success talking with feminists on Omegle lately. I ask them why they're a feminist and they'll say they support equal rights for women, etc. and I'll say "I support all those things too!"

Then they'll ask why I'm not a feminist and I'll say that I can't belong to a movement that doesn't condemn things like #KillAllMen, male tears, male fragility, mansplaining and just the general hate/contempt for men. First they'll try to say that this is not part of the mainstream but I'll point out that #KillAllMen is not a bannable offence on Twitter and misgendering someone is so it can't be that far outside of the mainstream. I'll generally use some pop culture examples and they usually agree at this point that they don't like that stuff either.

I'll say I'm glad to hear it and ask them to do me a favour and speak up the next time they hear something like that so together we can stand up for respect for all peoples, not just the ones feminism picks.

Then we talk about something else so I can leave it on a high note and let the idea percolate in the background.

Plant a tree whose shade you'll never enjoy and all that.

The more we can point out the division that already exists between how feminism acts and what many feminists believe, the more we can recruit people to help us deconstruct feminism and construct something more empathetic and human-centered.

You're doing great work, friend! I'll keep this stuff in mind for myself the next time it may come up.

Thanks! I appreciate you saying so and for putting another shoulder to the wheel. Many hands make light work!

Perfect summery of my issues with feminism.

You're not supposed to make a headline a question unless the answer is no, though.

Feminism is OK.

Feminists is a completely different matter.

Notably, their misapplicatipn of feminism is the primary reason I've a lot of problems with it.

Was Andrea Dworkin a misapplication of feminism then? Or does the fact that feminists celebrate radicals like her suggest that hateful misandry is a core component of the movement? What is this abstract idea of feminism that you feel you're able to delineate from the things feminists actually do and say?

[–]peanutbutterjams 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Too bad about the downvotes because I think you just meant 'feminism' as "equal rights for women". Yes?

At least that's the popular conception of feminism. You get into academic intersectionalist feminism and it's all whiteness this and privilege that and takes what I agree is a very worthy and necessary ideal and turns it into a weapon.

People here are probably more familiar with feminism as the latter than they are with feminism as 'equal rights for women' so that probably explains the downvotes.

Anyhow I agree there's a big gap between 'equal rights for women' and the way a lot of feminists act.

Yes, I meant feminism as in "equal rights for women".

[–]duhhhh 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More than 80% of people support equal rights for women, so I'd call that "normal person" rather than feminist.

Less than 20% of people in the US and less than 10% in the UK are willing to identify as feminists. To lots of pro-equality non-feminists, it is clear that the actions of feminist leaders, researchers, lobbiests, policy makers, and journalists promote inequality.

Why did you meant "Feminism" as "equal right for women"? What gave you the impression that those two were equivalent?
