This is an article that talks out of both sides of its mouth. It deserves credit for being better than the responses of #MeToo, ACLU, UN etc who are still unequivocally supporting Amber Heard, but ultimately it's still about shielding Amber Heard and #MeToo from criticism.

The article does contain some good parts about how abuse can be female-on-male and how abuse can be mutual. But there is a glaring hypocrisy in the way mutually abusive relationships are acknowledged. If the balance of evidence points toward the man being the aggressor, any suggestion of mutual abuse is shouted down as “victim-blaming”. When the balance of evidence is widely acknowledged to have tipped toward the woman being the aggressor, only then do we suddenly hear all this concern that the abuse might be mutual and we should withhold judgement.

Of course, there is some nonzero possibility that the Depp-Heard relationship was mutually abusive, but in my opinion the evidence points toward Heard being THE abuser and Depp being THE victim. Depp admitting to defending himself, and once throwing something back at the person throwing things at him, does not change that fact.

The therapy audio tape makes it very clear that the abuse was psychological as well as physical, and Heard was the perpetrator of all the psychological abuse in that audio. She rants at the top of her lungs about how Depp is supposedly the bad guy for running away when she throws pots and pans at him, while he calmly tries to explain to her that it's reasonable for him to run away when she's engaging in such violence. I cannot understand how anyone can listen to that tape and think the abuse is mutual. Nobody would be describing it as mutual abuse if the genders were reversed.

Below I'll respond to some more specific points made in the article.

While there is no video evidence of either Heard or Depp’s claims, in 2016, TMZ leaked a video of Depp smashing bottles and screaming obscenities at Heard.

The video did not show Depp engaging in any violence, nor is it clear whether he smashed any bottles. He certainly wasn't throwing things as Heard claimed the video showed. I know that because Heard wasn't ducking out of the way, she was instead adjusting the camera angle. The context of the video is unclear, but it seems like Depp was upset about something and Heard was trying to provoke him into appearing aggressive on camera.

To onlookers, the whole thing might seem like a whirlwind of conflicting accusations; people seem compelled to take sides that are informed by their own perspectives and biases, discrediting one narrative completely in favor of the other. But it’s critical to resist that societal instinct to minimize, demonize, or disregard either of these accounts... By accepting that perpetrators of abuse are often victims as well, we can better understand and address the dynamics of interpersonal violence.

As a general principle I don't disagree with this... but ultimately we need to make a decision based on evidence, and in this specific case I think the therapy audiotape clearly demonstrates that Heard was THE abuser. The court of public opinion is far from ideal, but it was feminists who put this case into the court of public opinion so they have no right to complain when the court of public opinion delivers a verdict they don't like. Did Bitch Media also object in 2016 when people were disregarding Depp's account?

Hitting, kicking, punching, or emotionally and verbally abusing men is generally considered a lesser offense if it’s retaliation for something generally considered scumbag behavior, such as cheating. There’s a huge difference between defending yourself and instigating violence, but when it comes to male survivors we often can’t recognize the line between them.

Unfortunately it seems Bitch Media cannot recognize the line between them! All Depp admitted to was defending himself, and once throwing something back at the person throwing things at him. That's not instigating violence. Any other violence by Depp against Heard remains unproven to my knowledge.

I will admit I am still researching the case, so I have not yet read through Heard's entire 300-page document, a dauntingly long read by any standard. I will write up my full opinion on all aspects of the case when I have finished researching it. But if Heard had really presented such devastating evidence, it would be all over the media by now.

Unfortunately, shortly after #JusticeForJohnnyDepp began trending, it was quickly infiltrated by people using it to brand Heard a “sociopath” and a liar, expressing their conviction that the audio was definitive proof that Depp had not abused her.

People had previously called Depp a sociopath and liar. Was that unfortunate too?

Others attempted to use the Depp-Heard example to proclaim that the #MeToo movement is ineffective and morally bankrupt, full of liars and opportunists.

It's difficult to prove how many liars and opportunists there are in the #MeToo movement, but Heard is certainly a prime example of one. Regardless of the exact number, the deeper problem with #MeToo is its logic: treating men accused by women as guilty until proven innocent. If the movement isn't already full of liars and opportunists, at some point it will be because it incentivizes that behaviour.

As Roslyn Talusan wrote in a recent article for Wear Your Voice, “#JusticeForJohnnyDepp was a misinformation campaign designed to provoke intense reactions and guilt people into supporting him at the expense of Heard.”

It's hard to take this article seriously when it praises that dumpster fire of an article from Wear Your Voice. On what basis are they calling #JusticeForJohnnyDepp a "misinformation campaign"? Didn't the hashtags #ImWithAmber and #MeToo do exactly the same thing, provoking intense reactions and guilting people into supporting Amber Heard and other female accusers? So how come this article is fine with #MeToo but not #JusticeForJohnnyDepp?

The audio does reveal Depp to likely be a victim of domestic violence, but that in no way negates Heard’s claim that her ex-husband abused her. The evidence is overwhelming, and ignoring this is willful ignorance.

Really? What is this overwhelming evidence? A "bruise", which plenty of witnesses and surveillance videos say wasn't there before Heard filed the restraining order? (Funny how Bitch Media doesn't mention that.) A video of Depp slamming cupboards? The fact that Depp trashed a hotel room in 1994, leaving his then-wife unharmed? Give me a break. If Heard has overwhelming evidence I'm yet to see it. Meanwhile, there's an audiotape of Heard admitting to throwing pots and pans at Depp while he tries to explain to her why it's wrong.

I've run out of space so I'll post a Part 2 in reply to my own comment.

[–]serpentineeyelash 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Part 2:

And as Talusan points out, it also means being mindful of all the dynamics, like the “power imbalance within a relationship—for example, the one between a beloved 52-year old cishet male actor and his 29-year old bisexual wife.”

This is very similar to the argument Heard made in the tapes as to why she couldn't be the abuser, and it is wrong. If Heard has an abusive personality and Depp has an accomodating/codependent personality, then all of these "power dynamics" are irrelevant. And men don't actually have the power in this situation, as is shown by the fact that people were much quicker to believe Heard than they are to believe Depp!

Cisgender women are held to an impossible standard in cases of domestic violence and rape, tasked with proving their own lifelong perfection before the violation of their bodies or spirits can be accepted as valid.

It sure doesn't look like it to me. It looks like it's the other way around - it's cisgender men who are held to impossible standards, and this article is doing it to Johnny Depp.

Look, I’m not saying there have never been accusations that were unfairly dismissed out of hand. But I am not at all convinced of the #MeToo narrative that there is or was any bias against female accusers or in favor of accused men, because as far as I can see all the evidence points to the reverse. The stereotype of “male aggressor, female victim” is at fever pitch today, but it was around for a long time before #MeToo.

Though transgender women, especially BIPOC transgender women, are held to the same standard as cisgender women in rape and assault cases, they’re almost never seen as “perfect victims” because our society sees their identities as inherently contradictory to any conceptualization of victimhood.

That's probably because trans women are seen as being more male, and our society sees male identity as inherently contradictory to any conceptualization of victimhood.

The questions and charges are all too familiar: Why was she wearing that dress? She smiled at him, he probably thought he liked her. She was flirting with other guys, of course he screamed at her. How much was she drinking? Why did she go there alone? They were married, what was he supposed to think? She takes antidepressants, so she’s a crazy liar who invents things in her mind.

Here the article is bringing up mainly arguments about rape, which are irrelevant to the case at hand, so this is just a blatant attempt to manipulate the emotions of the reader.

And it's Heard's argument that Depp must be the abuser because he drinks and takes drugs. In the therapy audiotape, it was her who used their marriage to justify all the abuse she'd inflicted on Depp.

Normal human fallibilities and behaviors are wielded against survivors even within their own families and friend circles, at their jobs, and in the courts—if they ever decide to press charges.

That's a good description of what this article is doing against Depp! But it is not a description of what people are saying about Amber Heard. Throwing pots and pans at your husband, and then berating him for running away when you do so, is not a normal human fallibility.

(I can't remember the details of the Argento case so I'll skip over that.)

Why is it so difficult for so many people to understand that victim and perpetrator are not mutually exclusive categories? Part of it is that our society—including law-enforcement institutions—still clings to an archetype of the perpetrator as a cisgender man who uses physical force to overpower cisgender-women victims.

It is feminists, more than anyone else, who have pushed the archetype of the perpetrator as a cisgender man who uses physical force to overpower cisgender-women victims. I don't deny that this narrative predates feminism, but feminists have been and continue to be the biggest proponents of it. When will feminists look in the mirror and acknowledge that, rather than silencing their critics and insisting their precious movement can do no wrong?

Every time a complication presents itself, you see who hates the #MeToo movement on some level. They pour out of the woodwork, declaring the movement has finally gone too far, or is dead, or both. They don a cloak of neutrality, the protection of the spectator, as opposed to a participant. It was inevitable, they say.

Here the article reveals its real purpose: damage control to shield #MeToo from criticism.

Online I’m anonymous so I need not bother with any cloak of neutrality - I will say it openly. If by "#MeToo" she means the current political climate in which men accused by women are considered guilty until proven innocent, then of course I will oppose that ideology in any way I can, because it’s an ideology that targets potentially any man. In order to make that argument I will bring up any evidence that I think people might listen to. And I think Johnny Depp’s case is one that people are starting to listen to, so of course I am going to bring it up as much as I can. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

The past behaviour of the #MeToo movement has made clear that it was never intended to include male victims, let alone mutual abuse or false accusations. Whenever male victims tried tweeting under the hashtag, they were shouted down and told it was about women. Any concern about false accusations or due process was shouted down pretty much unanimously.

There are non-gendered online support groups for abuse survivors, for example r/NarcissisticAbuse. In such spaces it is commonplace to see both men and women being described as abusers and victims. So why do we need a gendered movement?

That being said, if "#MeToo" were to somehow transform into a non-gendered movement advocating for all abuse victims, then it is unclear what if any political agenda it would have, because usually it’s not clear which party is the victim. When the accusation is false, the accuser is the abuser. (And even if the abuse is mutual, the accuser is still one of the abusers.) Moreover, Twitter is the worst medium to adjudicate the evidence for and against anything. The character limit incentivizes people to simplify the truth, and the networking aspect incentivizes people to form tribalistic echo chambers.

When such complications arise—and they will—advocates for survivors of domestic violence and rape shouldn’t default to defensiveness or confusion

Obviously I agree with this. I think Bitch Media is engaging in plenty of defensiveness and confusion, though not as badly as some other feminists.

but should instead acknowledge the essential truth at the heart of this movement: We must support survivors and work toward creating a world where violence is eradicated.

I'm not sure if the eradication of all violence is a realistic goal, but in any case that is not what #MeToo is doing in the real world.

Cases like Argento’s and Heard’s are co-opted in bad faith in order to shut down conversations about how to create that world

Here the author is just demonizing dissent. Anyway, #MeToo has all the mainstream propaganda on its side, so it's not as if dissenters could "shut down the conversation" even if we wanted to. We're just trying to get our voices heard in that conversation.

but we can use these cases to reignite, broaden, and deepen such discourse. Acknowledging how complex these issues are doesn’t negate the amazing work of the #MeToo movement; it only continues it.

For all the aforementioned reasons, I am very skeptical about whether #MeToo can be transformed into something I would consider reasonable. I'll believe it when I see it.

This is total bullshit. The only evidence that Depp abused Heard comes from Heard.

1.) She went to the police with fake bruises. 2.) She has been arrested for domestic abuse before Depp 3.) All of Depp's ex's claim he never lifted a finger.

This is why #metoo and #believewomen has been so harmful to our post-truth society. Knowing as we do that women make up about half of abusers, how can we possibly #believe them without evidence without also enabling abuse?

This case exposes the double standard. When Amber accused Depp she was believed immediately and without evidence. Depp was dropped from several roles.

Depp had to present 87 videos and multiple witnesses, including Heard's stylist about the fake bruises she wore to the police.

"Who's going to believe that you were abused by a woman?" Amber taunted him. And she was right as attested by this article that paints Depp as an abuser.

I can't believe there are still feminist weasels trying to smokescreen this. I call bullshit. As Amber herself pointed out,

There is a double standard in our society against men. Women are believed without evidence. Men are not believed even with extensive evidence.

As someone who has seen firsthand how evidence is ignored in false rape accusations, I am blind with rage that someone still thinks Amber is an "imperfect victim."

I heard the exact same thing after I pointed out that my friend's accuser had told three provable malicious lies with her accusation.

I am so sick of this shit.

No evidence needed against men. No amount of evidence is enough against women.

Look at the patterns. Amber Heard has a criminal record of DV against former lovers. There are also many testimonies of her abuse towards service industry people. Not to mention the fact that she mocks Depp about her abuse.

Depp has a history of being gentle and kind. All of his exes have spoken up in his defense.

This may be the worst aspect of a false accusation. You can live your whole as the best person you can be, you can be kind and sweet and gentle... the moment you are accused, none of that matters.

I have come to realize that both feminism and the #metoo movement are nothing but a huge bias in favor of women and against men. It was never about equality.

I used to believe that if I was a good person and treated others well and told the truth and formed strong bonds in my community that my reputation would be respected. I used to think that my reputation would protect me. I have since learned that none of that matters. One lie and it's gone forever.

Shame on you, weasel!

It is more important that innocence be protected than it is that guilt be punished, for guilt and crimes are so frequent in this world that they cannot all be punished.

But if innocence itself is brought to the bar and condemned, perhaps to die, then the citizen will say, 'whether I do good or whether I do evil is immaterial, for innocence itself is no protection,' and if such an idea as that were to take hold in the mind of the citizen that would be the end of security whatsoever.

The story of Heard's abuse of Depp, and the media response to the suicide of another somewhat-famous woman, Caroline Flack, who was charged with physical assault of her male partner, are two stories that are very telling about the state of gender affairs in Western societies. The simple fact is this: The amount of sexism in favour of women and against men is mind-numbing.

We are now at a state where, as you've rightly pointed out, innocence itself is no defense when a man is alleged to have abused a woman. Furthermore, clear evidence that a woman abuse a man is insufficient for people to think that of her in a negative light. These ideas are perpetuated loudly in the media, with feminists championing this sexism and pushing it further.

Like many men, my only way of protecting myself is to be very careful when dealing with women. To make sure that they are of good character before associating with them, because if it turns out that they are abusive, I'd probably be f**ked. This may sound sexist, but it is driven not of my own desire to do so, but by sexist people will take her side by default. To make it more fair though, I'd also be very careful when dealing with male feminists and white knights, as they are useful soldiers for abusive women whom can easily manipulate them into acting against me.

But in the larger picture, I don't really see a proper solution to this. To some degree, this is a manifestation of the degree of social power that woman have - if enough of them have these sexist attitudes, they are able to push society in that direction, with the help of other people, male and female, due to the inherent gynocentrism in society.

Men's issues cannot be addressed by the same means as women's issues - gynocentrism means people overall simply do not care enough about men to want to do something about it. Therefore, complaining about men's issues is unlikely to shift attitudes sufficiently. Instead, I think the only solution is for enough men to take notice of the degree of sexism against them in society and stand up for themselves. If enough men to so and act as a collective, then they will have sufficient power to do something about it. Until we/they do, things will get worse and worse for men, as we've seen in recent years.

Standing in the way of this are sexist men who are white knights and feminists who will do their utmost to protect women at the expense of men. Some of these men can be convinced to change sides once they see the reality of the world ("taking the red pill") - here, showing them the facts and pointing out how they are wrong are what is needed. Unfortunately, some of them cannot be convinced and will cling to their sexism despite any evidence. I don't know if there is any way to reach such men, and my only solution is be cautious around them in real life, and to fight against them where it is safe to do so, so they can't further poison society against men.

Yeah, it's pretty scary. You hear about cases where men in college get accused and the school kicks them out even when they have rock solid proof of innocence, how is that even legal? I'm so glad I finished college before this shit started.

The only evidence that Depp abused Heard comes from Heard.

Other than his statements that the abuse was mutual at times?

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

Lets look at exactly what he said. If I am being attacked and push someone away, that is self defense, not abuse.

Listen to full audio for yourself. He was being charitable to her.

Again look at their life patterns.

He almost lost a finger.

She went to the police with fake bruises.

[+]cromulent_weasel1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link

Lets look at exactly what he said.

“I left last night. Honestly, I swear to you, because I just couldn’t take the idea of more physicality, more physical abuse on each other,” Depp says. “Because had we continued it, it would have gotten fucking bad. And baby, I told you this once. I’m scared to death, we are a fucking crime scene right now.”

And while not a quote from Depp, this is also evidence in the public domain: in 2016, TMZ leaked a video of Depp smashing bottles and screaming obscenities at Heard.

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

"I did start a physical fight," Heard said, according to the transcript. Depp went onto claim that she was punching him to which Heard replied: "Babe, you're not punched ... I don't know what the motion of my actual hand was, but you're fine. I did not hurt you, I did not punch you, I was hitting you."

"I do not want to leave you. I do not want a divorce, I do not want you out of my life. I just want peace. If things get physical, we have to separate," Depp said.

Heard replied by claiming that she can't promise to be "perfect," stating: " I can't promise you I won't get physical again."

[+]cromulent_weasel1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

I think you are misunderstanding the article and why I posted it. I am NOT claiming that Heard didn't abuse Depp.

I'm saying that both of them abused each other.

It's so fucked up this mindset that one person is the perpetrator and basically evil and the other person is the victim and innocent as the driven snow. I think that only stupid people think that.

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Depp was seen breaking things and swearing. Heard was seen throwing bottles at Depp. She also nearly cut his finger off.

Depp presented video evidence and witness statements. Heard went to the police with fake bruises as proven by witness testimony, her stylist, and video evidence.

Depp was heard pleading for the violence to stop. Heard was heard saying she can't promise she won't be violent again.

Depp's exes vouched for him,. saying he was kind and gentle. Amber has a criminal record before Depp for DV.

You're right, Depp is not a perfect victim. That's no reason not to see that overwhelming evidence points to the fact that he was abused by amber, that she was always the instigator and that he was the only one who suffered serious physical damage.

"Not only did Heard abuse Depp but she also falsely accused him of things he did not do. Yes, Johnny Depp did admit to pushing her but that was after they were both already physical"

But if you want to say that we should give those accused of a crime the benefit of the doubt, due process, and innocence until proven guilty. Then join the fucking club because MRAs have been saying that for years!

However, if you still insist that Depp is not a victim of domestic abuse, as well as a fradulent police report, is it possible that you are simply sexist?

[–]serpentineeyelash 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am NOT claiming that Heard didn't abuse Depp.

I'm saying that both of them abused each other.

What, in your opinion, is some of the best evidence that Depp abused Heard?

And how do you reconcile it with the therapy audiotape in which Heard argues he should stay in the room when she gets violent, and Depp argues they should separate if there is any violence?

It's so fucked up this mindset that one person is the perpetrator and basically evil and the other person is the victim and innocent as the driven snow. I think that only stupid people think that.

Again, in principle I might agree with this. I imagine abusive relationships vary, with some being pretty one-sided and some being more two-sided.

But when the genders are reversed, it's always painted as the man being evil and the woman being innocent as the driven snow. Any suggestion to the contrary is shouted down as "victim-blaming". Why is this mutual-abuse argument only being raised now that the balance of evidence has tipped toward the woman being the aggressor?

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Listening to the entire thing makes it clear she was abusing him and he wanted out. He was worried about having to use violence in defense but he never admitted to actually doing it.

She cut off his finger. At some point he might actually raise a hand in self defense (which I'm guessing is something she was hoping for)

I like you dude, but I think it's better if you made your own point instead of linking the article. I know what your point is and heavily agree with it, but the article is clearly damage control for #MeToo, which may result in others assuming you are defending Amber Heard.

It's better to write your own personal post on your views regarding DV.

They're really scrambling to save the narrative. They went silent initially hoping it would go away. When it didn't and it became obvious they'd have to say something they went with this story of mutual abuse. She's not an abuser, she's a victim who responded to violence with violence.

Pathetic.

Oh and this:

However, in the same recording, Heard says that Depp cut off his own finger during an argument because he was “drunk and high on ecstasy.”

Is gaslighting.

She's just a total piece of shit.

She's so toxic and unrepentantly terrible that.... she'll probably have a long and successful career and never face any real consequences for her actions. She'll leave a trail of failed relationships and scarred people in her wake and never once be held accountable.

Isn't female privilege and male disposablilty great?

/Although she's apparently dating a woman now (going for political lesbian points, Johnny abused her so badly she can't even look at a man now!) so maybe if she cuts this woman's finger off people won't be so forgiving.
