Interesting article. It sounds like yet another case where interacting with the supposed enemy makes one realize that they’re nowhere near as bad as they look when you’re clouded by a powerful narrative.

IMO “Bernie bro” is little more than a misandrist dogwhistle created to discourage identity politics-prone leftists from voting for one of the evil white men.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In 2008 Hillary tried the same trick against Obama with 'Obama-boys'. Still you find a lot of misandrist labels in progressive circles, like 'progressive' and 'dudebros' and other that don't come to mind right now.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Still you find a lot of misandrist labels in progressive circles, like 'progressive' …

o.0

I'm guessing you meant to type something else there.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

*'Brogressive'.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it really just seemed to me like a concocted smear from the Hillary camp that got amplified by neoliberal feminist pundits to try to kneecap Bernie. I would guess Bernie has more 'bro's' than Warren or Klobuchar (depending on how you define the term), but probably a lot fewer than Biden or Bloomberg … and the idea that his movement is in any way dominated by them is absurd.

[–]plitox_is_a_bitch 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I swear, Hillary's campaign was run by nothing but bitchy, white (ok, one token Asian, but no blacks) twenty-something Jezebel-writer types, all pumpkin spice and makeup on fleek and no one weighing more than 120lb or from a family that made less that $150k a year.

[–]C0dey 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

BLM supported Hilary, funny enough. They even crashed a rally of his.

The guy who marched alongside MLK on Washington, and supported a black senator when racism was at an all time high was their enemy, while the one they supported was mentored by the previous head of the KKK. Can't make this shit up even if I tried, lol!

[–]radred609 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And he took it on the chin and gave them his platform.
They crashed his rally, and he stood there and amplified their message.

Bernie is literally the "stand behind" ally that is called for. Clinton is the definition of "speaking for you".

evil white men

Whoever says that about Sanders, ask them if they believe antisemitism is an attack on the white race and if the Holocaust is a white genocide. You'll probably get instablocked but such is life in the blue checkmark year.

[–]pfo_ 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Racism is more complex than just skin color, IMO reducing it to skin color is an American phenomenon. In the Holocaust (but also in the Tutsi genocide or the Armenian genocide, there probably are many more examples) victims had the same skin color as the murderers.

[–]ur_waifus_prolapse 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, but that isn't what the blue checkmarks believe.

[–]pfo_ 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Still, it is such an American thing to label the Holocaust a "white genocide". The Jews were not murdered because they were white.

Well, that broke my heart. Still, I welcome all "Bros," even if they had to learn the hard way.

Bernie actually has more female support than male; the last figure I saw was something like 60% female. I've been a Sanders Sister since 2015. So to make things worse, it's not JUST misandry, it's ALSO female erasure. How's that for the ugliest and most toxic narrative ever? Truly diehard Hillbros are about as anti-humanitarian as it gets, in my experience.

My experience was very different from hers. I literally had it mansplained to me by male Hillary supporters that I don't get to just support the feminist candidate, I have to vote with my ovaries for ovaries or I'm internalizing misogyny. Does it get more ironic than that? A man trying to strongarm and gaslight a woman into voting for a woman instead of a man who aligns with her policy preferences? Personally, I feel it would be hypocritical to choose anatomy over policy when I as a woman want to be respected for who I am rather than judged for what's between my legs, which no one gets to choose anyway. Shouldn't I respect the person rather than the bits if that's what I want in life? Isn't that only just?

I'm glad the writer of the article woke up, but it still breaks my heart. I was almost one of those people who lost their life to a lack of health insurance. Only random chance saved me. I spent nights in the hospital with tears streaming down my face as I thought of all the innocent people who died because they weren't as lucky as me.

Bernie "BROS," and I've long since found slightly more female than male ones, are typically the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I remain a fan of us.

I thought it was really encouraging to see this particular article in a relatively mainstream publication which is targeted towards women.

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

This is very wholesome.

I'm always interested in seeing people with different points of view getting along, even if they still disagree, and especially if they continue to built wholesome relationships in spite of the disagreement.

Crap sub. Only one active (and inconsistent) mod with a Feminist bias while the majority of the community has a right-farish right bias that dog pile and downvote into oblivion anyone that goes against their narrative(even if presented with facts that goes against said narrative). Even purple pill debates is better than it I'd say.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I tend to agree with you about the mod but I don't think your characterization of the community as a whole is fair. There's a pretty sizable part of the community that's left of center AFAICT (though my perusal of their discussion threads has been pretty intermittent recently).

[–]C0dey 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It has changed big time. It's been roughly a year since I last been there, but for the most part the base is center right, with a lot of pandering to the farish right types while simultaneously condemning those who stray off the center left. The community is very pro-life and anti anything that may help the lower class.

[–]LemonCanopy 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I went down the rabbit hole of their original discussion where they tried to agree on standard definitions for terms like patriarchy. Feminists were forced to confront the fact that you have to either define the patriarchy as something that oppressed most men and privileged most women or define it as a thing that doesn't exist in western culture.

[–]Aaod 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This entire article could be summed up as I still hate men and refuse to admit that, but my abortion is a moral one other people are just wrong type of thinking. Other people? Fuck them they are men let them suffer! Oh no not my men! It is the same idiocy you see from poor conservatives voting to fuck over other poor people even though they themselves are also on foodstamps. What a bitch she is nothing more than a female supremacist even at the end.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

???

… nothing more than a female supremacist even at the end.

Where on earth are you getting that? This is about at the article's end:

Contrary to the Bernie Bro narrative, the growing progressive movement in this country is multiracial, includes all genders, and is full of people who care deeply about creating a better world for everyone …

That's "female supremacy"???

[–]Aaod 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

At the end she wrote stuff like this

I used to think supporting Sanders would also somehow make me less of a feminist. Now I know that couldn’t be further from the truth—my feminism needs to fight for women who don’t have $500 a month to spend on health insurance premiums, for single moms working three part-time jobs and still not making ends meet, for women who can’t leave an abusive marriage because her insurance is tied to her husband’s job.

She is only caring because of her dead boyfriend and because of women not because she gives half a rats ass about men or other people she is still prioritizing women over men with the women and children first thinking. She cares more about women and multiracial stuff than she does men which means she is still prioritizing others over others that is not fucking equal. This is not some act of contrition this is her feeling guilty and trying to rationalize her previous and current shitty stances on stuff to alleviate a guilty conscious and absolve herself of responsibility while still maintaining the same shitty stances and hatred that caused the guilt in the first place.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think you can only take that interpretation if you presume she's speaking in bad faith, and while I can't know to a moral certainty that she's speaking in good faith, I don't see any reason to presume otherwise.

You quote her talking about the various ways different Bernie policies will help women … but that's exactly what I would expect her to do because a) she's addressing self-identified feminists like she used to be, and b) she's writing in Elle, whose audience is 77% female. She's trying to get identitarian feminists (and women in general) to support Bernie's class-based approach because that approach will do more to help the women those identitarian feminists claim to want to help than the exclusively-identitarian approaches those feminists tend to advocate.

[–]Aaod 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Trying to appeal to women supremacists by playing to what they care for leaves a rather foul taste in my mouth and just encourages them. If they are so blind and uncaring about others especially men because of either their own biases or outright hatred I don't really care for them and know they will toss us under the bus the second they get the chance as they have done so previously. Just because I understand the women are wonderful effect and I know that means men and women care a whole lot more about women than they do men does not mean I think it is gross and disgusting to intentionally take that strategy it just encourages that sort of bullshit to continue.

[–]fcsquadleft-wing male advocate[S] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While I somewhat empathize with where you're coming from, I think it's a bad approach to take from a political perspective. If you assume that everyone who disagrees with you are dyed-in-the-wool enemies, you're going to alienate the subset of those people that you might have otherwise been able to persuade.

Cassie Jaye was pretty much a bog-standard feminist (with all the underlying ideological misandry that implies) when she started work on The Red Pill … and she ended up changing her mind after listening to people talk to her in a straight, respectful, and non-dismissive manner.

And from a political perspective, it's even less important to change someone's basic ideology than it is to get their vote. If Kate's article gets some women to switch to Bernie purely out of self-interest, that's still a win.
