I feel like there is a conflation going on here. There are two sets of lawsuits, the suits against the universities for violating due process, and the suits against the accusers for defamation. They don't have the same consequences if successful. Edit: in other words, you can be in favor of one but against the other.

If you get called a rapist on social media, what recourse do you really have? Nobody has the time or the energy for a flame war on social media, (which you will lose by the way.) In court, even just in arbitration, you can at least present evidence to ostensibly neutral parties.

If you are falsely accused of rape, how else do you clear your name without suing the person who lied? (But false accusations are extrememly rare- queue Lisak et al.) But remember ALL of those studies are about accusations taken to police. NONE of them have anything whatsoever to say about the veracity of accusations made on social media, sometimes anonymously, during the #METOO era. This has all happened to quickly.

Ultimately, if you are falsely accused, you don't care what the actual rate of false accusations are. You just want a chance to salvage some of the radioactive fallout that is your new life.
