Man is found NOT guilty of rape, but the cops keep telling his prospective employers that he "might" have done it anyway. Another reason why false allegations are so evil.

Surprisingly progressive view, from what i've seen of AVFM.

[–]Strikester101 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

What's wrong with AVFM?

[–]mewacketergi 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are insufficiently lefty for some of us.

[–]cameronlcowan -6 points-5 points-4 points 7 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Very alt right

[–]bakedpotato486 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm convinced that "alt-right" are just the lefties that have slipped out of the far-left's overton window.

[–]serpentineeyelash[M] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Alt-right" does have a meaning, it means white nationalism. But sometimes the term is slanderously applied to people who have nothing to do with the alt-right.

[–]cameronlcowan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’re not wrong.

[+]ThePigmanAgain1 points 7 years ago [recovered] (20 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't go that far.

[–]cameronlcowan -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

I had Paul on my podcast and I’d say it.

[+]ThePigmanAgain1 points 7 years ago [recovered] (18 children) | Copy Link

Really? What precisely did he say that qualifies as alt-right?

[–]LacklustreFriend -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Do you mind pointing a specific quote or view of his?

[–]cameronlcowan -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

The part on gamer gate was particularly alt-right.

[–]LacklustreFriend 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Like I said, can you provide a specific quote or at least a time stamp? You're providing your opinion on his view, not his view/quote.

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I’ll summarize it. So when I scheduled this I thought I’d be talking about PUAs, players, and other such problems. I was surprised at how circumspect he was about modern gender politics. The reason I bring up gamergate is that at the time, they had taken a very different view than everyone else. Paul didn’t see gamergate as an actual scandal which surprised me.

AVFM has some good resources for men and can be very helpful for those going through divorce/custody issues and those dealing with false rape accusations. But for as much good work as they do, I find that they often have regressive views on gender. From time to time you’ll see a post about the differences between men and women. They will post something sensational about gender politics in the media and continue to promote the idea that we don’t have an equality problem in this country. Are they hard alt-right? No. But they are certainly in the sphere, if in the outer edges.

[–]LacklustreFriend3 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I don't understand, because Elam says he didn't see gamergate as a scandal (i.e. he didn't care about it?), that makes him alt-right?

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It’s not that he didn’t care about it, he actually wanted to do a debate about that what bothered me is that he was not concerned with toxic masculinity behind it. Also, some of their posts traffic in alt-right gender attitudes.

[–]LacklustreFriend2 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You seem to be really reaching. You're also using guilt by association. Just because the alt right like some of his posts doesn't mean he is altright or supports them. I'm sure both you and the altright agree that kicking puppies is bad, doesn't mean you support the altright.

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I was surprised by how circumspect Paul was. I was expecting to be arguing with him for an hour and end the interview frustrated. However, almost the exact opposite happened. I was pleasantly surprised and there are lots of valuable posts that AVFM posts. The post we're talking about spoke to me. I've struggled with the "what kind of man am I?" question in my own life.

That said. AVFM has some problems:

I've only read two in but I notice a trend.

they lump separate groups as one to make them all look bad.

they use guilt by association.

And they take things out of context.

all in all. it doesn't look like sound arguments are being made that would point to avfm being actually as bad as they believe.

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It’s both/and. AVFM has helpful stuff but there’s also that element at work and they don’t actively discourage it.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What element? that they have the same demographic as some other less likeable groups?

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

There some pick up artist crossover for sure.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely2 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

rooshv is not a pua. In fact he actively condemned them.

elliot rodgers was not a pua. Most of his online presence was on puahate

TRP is not PUA.

Incels are not PUA.

So with that in mind. Where is this crossover? and why is it a problem?

[–]LacklustreFriend3 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You do realise you're linking biased articles on a male advocate sub right? Including the infamous one from Souhern Poverty Law Centre calling MRAs misogynist and male supremists.

[–]cameronlcowan1 point 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Of course. There are plenty of places that advocate for men like The Good Men project that aren’t as cozy with alt-right elements.

Not the best advocacy IMHO.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well first off. Gotta point out some slight historical inaccuracy

high heeled shoes "started" as a cavalry/horse riding thing.

The heel keeps the feet securely in the stirrups. And eventually. It became sort of a sign of nobility. Because owning horses/being in a military position that demanded boots like that was usually a sign of wealth.

Then it later became a matter of the nobility wearing extravagant shit to be extravagant.

In fact. a lot of the things pointed out in this article as examples of what was previously considered manly have some pretty organic developments. and backgrounds as to why they ended up the way they did.

Some like the greeks and romans IIRC are mostly cultural.

But others like the pink and blue colours come from factors like resources (dyes that worked well in mass production) and other trends (the navy uses blue, and it was popular to dress up young boys in those little navy uniforms)

All in all this is really just the history buff in me. But there is something to glean from this, and that's that masculinity in the context of this article is generally more situational than it is a sort of "trend"

Moving on. This line kind of bugged me.

The sooner you accept that — that who you are right now (who you really are) is the manliest and most attractive version of yourself––the sooner that you’re going to find your confidence…

Now, I'm not sure if it's intended. But the way this is written seems to imply that self improvement is not necessary for confidence.

I call bullshit. We should aim to evolve. We should aim to be better than our past selves. and in doing so. That is how we gain confidence.

When I was younger, I was a socially awkward shut in who was afraid to speak to my peers, (mind you this was mostly due to years of bullying and ostracism)

But no less I took it upon myself to learn how to be a more socially fluent person. I scoured online materials. I forced myself to talk even if what I said fell flat and/or made me look bad. I constantly forced myself out of my comfort zone.

And now?

Now I've had friends confide that they look up to me as a mentor for things like personal confidence and wit.

I've worked semi successfully as a salesperson (I have moral qualms about trying to sell people things they don't need.)

I've talked my way into having dinner with a family who I had only met several minutes prior while working as a salesperson.

I've even been asked to officiate a wedding.

I've intimidated other men without trying.

I've been the "pleasant spectacle" of several parties.

And that's all because I didn't accept myself as I was.

I wanted something about me to change. So I put in tons of work and changed it.

And I know that it isn't that easy for everybody. And I know that there are both physical and mental ailments that make it more difficult.

But confidence is a skill. It's like a muscle (or maybe in this analogy something closer to the electric organs of an electric eel)

and every time you flex that muscle. you radiate confidence. You put a little spin on a word. You talk with a more calm and assertive voice. You stand up straight. You take up space. You stay relaxed. And if you mess up. You act like you meant to do it all along.

Over time. You get so good at it that you don't have to focus any more.

you just do.

But otherwise. I like the message.

Be what you want to be. And do it in a way that is true to yourself.

As I said in another post.

the masculine role is traditionally much wider than we give it credit.

it encompasses things like Charisma, Kindness, leadership, Caring for those around you. And more importantly. offering value.

The manliest heroes of ancient cultures were those who could not only fight. But those who could sing and make merry, And those who could make everybody around them feel valuable.
