Can we talk Christmas?

I like the Christmas season with the kids but I hate hate hate gifts. Breakfast with Santa, the Nutcracker, seeing holiday lights, decorating the tree, cookies, family get together (my parents and in laws host, which works great for me), that's all great.

Gifts are a major hassle and I'd be happy never to give or receive one again. The kids have way too much stuff as it is, everything my husband likes is super specialized and expensive, and then there's the awkwardness of getting appropriate gifts for my kids' teachers and my coworkers. Bleh.

It’s Thanksgiving and my husband’s birthday this week. My mother-in-law volunteered to provide the food for his friend party and I totally accepted her help. Tomorrow, we are bringing a ham and a couple store bought pies to the family party (my side). Friday is his actual birthday and I’ve got breakfast planned and a gift. Idk what we will do for dinner. Saturday, his parents will babysit for a few hours so I’m taking him on a date. It’s hard having birthdays around the holidays.

For Christmas, my husband and I each get our kids a gift and they get each other one and then Santa brings one. They’re little so they want things like a bulldozer, a bow and arrow with a suction cup, an art kit, an RC car. They are super easy to shop for. My husband loves gift giving and I’ve totally let him take the lead. I quit doing special gifts for his parents and let him be in charge of his side of the family.

We throw a small (I usually invite my sister and her current boyfriend) Christmas Eve party that involves Christmas crackers (you’re from the UK so you get this) and watching either Doctor Who Christmas specials or the best Simpson’s Christmas episodes. For Christmas, we finally put our foot down last year and decided to not do the extended family party and just stay home all day.

I love decorating for the holidays, baking/cooking, family time, all of it. But I am stressing over gifts this year.

My SO's interests are just too expensive for me to funnel money into at the moment. I feel terrible about it. I've found a few things, but I'm not really sure how I'm going to make this work. I might have to make a special trip out without him to go pick up some things, which will be a tough sell lol. Thankfully, my family started doing Secret Santa, so I don't have to get a gift for everyone! Still have to get things for the niblings and the SO's family. It's just a nightmare to get things for people that they actually want or need, but don't already have!

I’m looking forward to when I’m married and can spend Christmas week with my husband. For now we both spend it with our separate families, and the longer we’re together the more it sucks to be away from him for a week or more.

I also hate gift giving (and receiving for that matter). I don’t feel like I can afford it and I’m too stressed to think of gift ideas until after thanksgiving. Plus his family always asks me what I want for Christmas which stresses me out because I feel like they’re putting pressure on me to decide how much they spend on me. Just give me socks please!
